  • In search of powder near I95

I am looking for a place relatively near I95 (between SC and NY) that sells gunpowder by the pound and percussion caps. I am running low, and only need three or four pounds at the most (and that will last me for many years) and just figure it would be easier and cheaper than ordering it through the mail. Every time I’ve purchased powder in the past, I’ve gone to Back Creek outside of Winchester, but have no intention of taking a detour that far from my planned route with gas at $4+ in a loaded down SUV.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Gander Mountain in Ashland, VA will more than likely have what your'e looking for. They are literally right off of I-95.

Note: One challenge you may have in purchasing powder, from a retailer in a state you are not currently a resident in, is that they may deny you the sale. I recently experienced this while attempting to purchase powder from both Dicks and Gander Mountain here in Pittsburgh...they allowed me to do it a year ago, but this Spring I was denied the sale due to my Virginia Driver's License.

    Best of Luck!

Try Green Top Sporting Goods between Richmond and Ashland, VA on US 1, about a quarter-mile off I-95 near it's intersection with I-295 . They're the state's largest firearms dealer.... just ask any beaurocrat/politician from New York....

Last I heard, Greentop is no longer carrying powder...only the composites, smokeless, pyrodex..etc. Sadly enough, DeGoff's in Mechanicsville is also no longer carrying Black Powder. I really hate to not be able to support the little guy (especially when large chains such as Gander Mtn. and Bass Pro move in right across the street), but sometimes the little guy just doesn't have what you need.

I second Mr. Harrelson's recommendation for Greentop (which is literally right across the street from the aformentioned Gander Mtn.), but last time when our Unit QM attempted to purchase BP from them, it was no longer being carried.

My son works at the Fredericksburg Gander Mtn. He said the manager is considering no longer carrying BP. I'm not sure why, there sure seems to be demand for it.

            Thanks Guys,
As far as real black powder, Gander Mountain in Fayetteville, NC and Ashland, VA do not carry it. The Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg, VA does carry it, but they are all out right now (although it is on order, but they are completely oblivious to when it might arrive).

Green Top does not carry real black powder. They referenced me to Clark Brothers in Warrenton, VA. I have not called them as the last time I’ve went from Fredericksburg to Warrenton it took longer than it looked like it would on the map.

            Any place else?

Bob's Gun Shop in Chesterfield, VA. I don't have the contact for the shop anymore, but perhaps someone local may be able to provide it.

Bob's shop is a short distance off I-95...taking the 288 interchange to Hull St.

That's the last place we bought our powder from.

I95 goes right past Bass Pro Shops in Hampton Va $13 a pound. Gotex Rifle Black Powder FFF & FFFF. Gotta ask the gun clerk tho, wont find it on the shelf. They can be sketchy about sellin it to people they dont normally see in the store, tell the clerk youre a living historian.
