  • The Company of Military Historians

I came across this website http://www.military-historians.org/company/index.htm while doing some online perusing of military history. It's peaked my interest and wanted to know if anyone on this site has heard of this organization and knows on whether or not they're a legitimate group. I thought of emailing them a few questions, which I will do, but I wanted an opinion from a "not connected" second party before I send off money for annual dues.

Maybe there are members of the company of military historians here on the AC.:)

Ken, there are several members of the "Company" here on the A/C. I'm sure you'll hear from some soon.

The Company is very legitimate. Pretty serious about what they do. As Dusty said already. Quite a few on this board are members. Some have actually written articles for the jourmal. You'll never go wrong if you are serious about doing legitimate research on military matters with CMOH.

Les Jensen is the head honcho..... that says alot. You have to be recommended by a current member. There is an application to submit.

I am a High Private in The Company of Military Historians. You'll find in their forum my informal write-up of this year's conference in Nashville, TN. Our members include reenactors including several members on this website, museum curators (Les Jensen) or directors, leading researchers and authors. Many members are into the material culture and study the uniforms, weapons and military artifacts in the period of their interest. Their research is shared in the magazine. At the conference, you'll rub elbows with them and will find that they are a down-to-earth group. Members are happy to share information. Here's a link to an article of mine that originally appeared in our magazine, The Military Collector and Historian. http://www.bivouacbooks.com/bbv7i1s1.htm The original as released had endnotes so if you're interested, ask them for that particular back issue. They have four more of my articles that awaiting release.

BTW, if you want to gwine, feel free to use me as your sponsor.

            I have the honour, Sir,

Even if you're not an active member and go to the meetings and such, their journal alone is a great resource for any reenactor/living historian. there have been some wonderful articles on anything from the tanning methods of period leathers, to rare and unique cartridge types, and a plethora of other items from various periods.

I am a member as well.

                      My self as well!

One of the great things about the Company is the other areas of Military history that is presented. In the last few issues of the Journal, there has been a great set of articles on the Triple Alliance War in South America during the 1860's . Very interesting to see other wars going on at the same time as ours!

There is well over 50 years of excellent research to be found. More importantly, research that has stood up well over time.

There has always been opportunities for a one - on - one contact for research, others who may share your interests, Annual Meetings, and those times for behind the scenes tours of items usually not seen by the general public.
