  • New Sack at Appo. NHP

As I have stated before on Mr. Starbuck's thread...here are some Pics of this "new" sack coat worn by Major Frederic Scott. Now since it is now in the display case and Joe Williams was not on the park today I was unable to take detailed snap shots of the interior! but good news since we both work on the same day come Monday I should be able to snap a few more with better quality

Now as for the sack. It is (IMHO) more or less a private purchase sack that was used for military use. It is double breasted and made out of some type of deep dark grey broadcloth. The stitching is rather faded and while the pictures do not show any real major details, it appears to have a combination of hand sewn and machine stitching. there is a small pocket watch pocket on the right hip and the buttons are small and made of black rubber. the unique lining is a red linen and that brown tag on the coat reads “Coat worn by Maj. Frederic R. Scott at the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, April 12th, 1865.”

Hope all of you can enjoy, and feel free to stop by the park and take a look for yourself this weekend.

Again I do apologize for the lack of quality but hey something is better than nothing right?

    Hey buckshot, sign your posts!

I saw the coat on my way to Petersburg the other day. I can't wait to see what Harper's Ferry has to say!

Wondering about the black rubber buttons. Although available during the war especially for a civilian coat, I wonder if maybe the coat had different (brass) buttons during the conflict and was changed out later?

It's my understanding that in some areas during the Reconstruction years CS veterans were allowed to continue wearing their uniform clothing in public as long as they didn't display rank or other military things, like buttons. Urban myth?

      Thanks,

Well there is some wear and tear around the buttons that possibly may be from a larger button, but it is hard to tell. As for the reconstruction years question yes, it seems that many former officers/enlisted men kept having uniforms being made and many times these former officers would wear the uniforms while in public. Eventually federal officials ordered that all buttons, emblems of rank had to be covered or not worn as it was a symbol of the late confederacy.

as for my signature I don't know what happened, I have one set up....(buckshot?)

Lastly, I went into work this morning and it seems that Joe Williams early in the morning took the sack up to Harper's Ferry, so I was unable to take better pictures. But!!! we will be having up on display our other officers frock eventually as it is in restoration.
