  • Skeleton found in Thayer may date to Civil War era

    From the News-Leader.

THAYER, MO. -- An anthropologist says a skeleton found in a riverbank likely died around 150 years ago. It’s possible a gunshot killed the person during the Civil War.

Someone found the skeletal remains on city property last Sunday at the Warm Fork River. Flooding washed away several feet of riverbank, revealing the bones.

State, county and local law enforcement officers spent hours excavating the bones, which appeared to be old. They showed photographs of the site to an anthropologist at the University of Missouri. He believes the remains date to the 1860s or older.

That opinion, along with the discovery of what appears to be a musket ball, led to a halt in the excavation. A Missouri Department of Natural Resources archaeological team will come to the site.

Thayer police say they want to “deal with the remains in a reverent and professional manner.” They ask people to not disturb the site. Police Chief David Bailey said the site will be under surveillance and trespassers will be prosecuted.

Be interesting to see how that plays out.
