Battalion (or higher) drill with a full (or close-to-full) compliment of troops. With musicians and the whole shebang. Just once, to see a dress parade with the correct amount of men under arms swinging into formation would be a gas.

        Folks,

This has been a very good thread until recently. Let's try to keep it on topic. At quality events, what would you like to see, do, and/or experience?

It is not about what you wish you would see -or not see- at a mainstream event.

Forgot about that one and that I had created the above banner. I hadn't deleted it from the server. It's been sitting in cyberspace waiting for another reason to publish it.

Re: What would you like to experiance at future events?

This may be a crazy idea, but one thing I have always wanted to do was a series of events that were chronologically connected to one another.

For example, let's take local Missouri events. Couldn't we have a militia muster in the spring, right after secession, and have the same guys face their first battle a month or two later? Here in Missouri we often have State Guard or Home Guard events, so I should think it might be doable to have the men muster in around the beginning of May 1861 and do a Wilson's Creek or Athens living history in August. What do you think? Would something like this be feasible elsewhere?

We civilians have been doing something like this for a while, since we tend to take on the same roles in most of our events (for example,we have some of the Boonesfield ladies taking on their usual roles at Marmaduke's) -- but I think it would be great to have that planned ahead of time so that there's a clear chronological progression.

Re: What would you like to experiance at future events?

To add to Kiev's Joe Brown's Pets.
A good small event would follow the events in the summer and fall of 1863. The Georgia Militia was sent into Northwest Georgia to drive off or break up bands of deserters and thieves that raided the railroad and farms from the area around Cartersville to near Ringglold, Georgia. The bandits usually called themselves Rangers.
After some small skirmishes and a few Ranger camps destroyed, the Militia gave up. The Rangers, although weakened, would continue their outlaw raids until Brigadier General Wofford brought them to bay in March 1865.
Yes this would make a nice small tactical. You would not need more than 40 or 50 at most per side.

Just thought I add this in for thought.

              Thanks,

PLEASE !!! Do this event where spectators can view it. Bummers isnt going to allow for this. I would setoff towards Georgia in a flash to see this.

Timely. I just posted in the Bummers folder about my affinity for Joe Brown's Pets and the other works in the Bummers suggested reading materials.

No spectators is one of the key features that will allow Bummers to be discussed as THE event of the first decade of the 21st Century. It means we can conduct life as it was in Georgia during Sherman's march without the pitiful cries from PETA as livestock is cut down and butchered, angry retorts from women's rights organizations because women are treated like property, shouts of displeasure from the NAACP when common 19th Century words are spoken or minstrels take the stage, complaints of the thick smoke from burning homes choking throats and burning eyes of some litigous schmuck, or even one word from some anti-violence PCer. Spectators want a bang bang show. That's fine and there are plenty of good reenactments for them. Bummers however is for the particpants, and nothing else promises to deliver so much for those lucky enough to get an invitation.

For what its worth and coming from a true soup sandwich like myself ....not very much:

I am nowhar near worthy of such invitation.....but am a spectator that seeks to view what is purported to represent the pinnacle of CW historical recreation illuminated by a first-person, period written record.

I find historic value and personal satisfaction in having been to spectate more than one event in connection with this forum.

                        Silvana,

Yep, and it worked very well when Payne's Farm (part of the sputtering Mine Run campaign) in late 2005 led into Winter 1864 2006, as back to back events in this region. The solid background information for the 151st NYVI was simply outstanding in this regard. Some of the 2005 after effects added to the 2008 event, too.

What I'd like to see is an event where civilian participation is documented for the following:

A period house that the civilians can occupy. A battle in the near vicinity. Men being wounded in the yard and remaining wounded for the duration of the event. The civilians giving round the clock care of the wounded (maybe a civilian and/or military doctor). Everyone in the hospital (soldiers and caregivers in first person action and interaction). In otherwords an event very similar to what we did at Burkittsville in '01.

The biggest hurdle that we've found is that reenactors don't want to lie around wounded for 8+ hours. If we could get something like this going it would be a great event. There are some on this board who made it happen once, can we do it again?

                          Linda.

                            Linda,

We'll know by sunrise this coming Sunday, and then see what happens in mid-November. I'll readily point out that both of these events involve wooden barns. Part of the charm of Hospital D in 2001 was the church actually served as a hospital in 1862.

One proposed event for 2009, and one conceptual event for 2010 feature three civilian dwellings, and will be looking for occupants. Two of the three were vacant at an event in 2006, simply because there were no civilians available to occupy them. Opportunities come and go....

                            Curt,

Thanks for repeating the lesson for the slower students!
