  • What's too old?

    Gentlemen,

The occasion of my 63rd. birthday has prompted this question. What do folks consider the maxium age for people participating in CPH events, as a private in the ranks?

I have heard that the oldest soldier on record was 80 years of age.

I think this is largely an individual decision but a couple more years and you'll be able to depict a War of 1812 Veteran reenlisting. ;-)

My Dad is a 63 year old Private and he keeps up better than most of the young newer guys.

Thank you, Bryan! I thought this topic had been addressed before.

Man...do it until you get tired of it! Then look into the civilian side of things and do that until you get tired of that...:D

                  Old Pards,
                  I've often wondered the same.
I'm 57, and I sure as hell don't resemble a Civil War soldier. I do keep my weight down, and my fitness level is high enough to do all expected. I think I enjoy each event a bit more that the next guy because I am very aware that my reenacting days are numbered.
But ........ at what point am I disrespecting a hobby I love?
Like Billy Chapel retiring for "the love of the game," I have far too much respect for the real soldiers to dishonor their memory with my wrinkles and gray hair.
As an Iowan, I have an easy out. I can change my impression to the
37th "Greybeard" Regiment, but I'm not ready for garrison/guard duty. I like campaigning with the Hairy Nation.

I did a search, but didn't get a hit on the earlier thread.

Mark really hit the nail on the head concerning my concerns. Like him, I'm not too fat and so far, I'm able to keep up, but I wonder at what point, the "old guy" gets to be a distraction at events.

I sort of doubt anyone is going to tell you, face to face, to stay home because you just look too damn old.

                      Hallo!

I have applied for a Chinese passport.
                      They say I am 16.
                      Is that too young?

                      ;) :)

IMHO, "age" is relative to one's appearance with the physical manifestations of Time and Life Style, or one's Mental Picture, and/or one's pards as well as which segment of the Civil War Community that is more "lenient" versus and "less forgiving."

I have an older pard whose family suffers from premature aging where he is the first male to live longer than 51. However, he and his son were often mistaken for 65-70-75 year plus Senior Citizens when they were in their 20's and early 30's.
