Attached is a picture of my wife's g-g-g-grandfather, William Carroll Hester from Alabama. He was a member of Co. E, 4th Alabama Cavalry. Trying to figure out what type of coat he is wearing. I have seen another coat similar to this worn by a Mississippian and I believe his name was Tulos and the picture is in Soldiering in the Army of Tennessee. Any ideas? Looks like it might be an overcoat.

Re: Help with uniform

At first look, it appears to be a double-breasted frock or even a shell, which simply hasn't had the "ornamental" row of buttons added paralleling the "functional" row. Adjectives in quotations, as their roles are reversed if there is a corresponding row of buttonholes on the opposite frontpiece to each.Marc A. Hermann

Re: Help with uniform
That is an excellent thought Marc. Had racked my brain trying to figure it out and never thought of a double breasted frock without one row of buttons, but I could see how that might be what the coat is. He was a sergeant, so maybe just trying to set himself apart from the privates.Justin Morris

Re: Help with uniform
Hello Mr. Morris,
It looks like maybe a civilian frock that has been altered to look "militant", by simply doing as Mr. Hermann explained, adjusting the button arrangement. However, it could have been completely home-procurred and made to look like a uniform.Christopher E. McBroom, Capt.

Re: Help with uniform
Hi,
I have seen 2 coats that look similar to this one. One was worn by Pvt. J. O. McGehee of the 53d Virginia Infantry, and the other one was one worn by Gen. Bryan Grimes of North Carolina. I would say it is most likely a civilian overcoat, put into military service.Andrew Kasmar
