Widow of Confederate soldier dies at 93
Maudie White Hopkins, who grew up during the Depression in the hardscrabble Ozarks and married a Confederate army veteran 67 years her senior, has died. She was 93.

I thought the part about the sock holders was interesting.

Wayne, i saw this on Yahoo news last night, i thought it was pretty odd that she married the guy that was 60 years her elder. I thought it was pretty neat though that the guy enlisted in Pikeville, Ky, kinda hit close to home for me, just about 30 miles south of where i live. I guess she got a good deal, farm, land, and everything else.

I did'nt even know about Mrs. Hopkins. I thought the last living Confederate Widow passed away in 2004. Her name was Mrs. Alberta Martin, and she left us on Memorial Day. Boy, would'nt it have been a grand thing to have met these fine ladies?

Mrs. Hopkins story surfaced through one of her daughters I believe, after the death of Mrs. Martin.

Yes, the opportunity to meet Mrs. Martin and talk quietly with her was a grand one, and a well-treasured memory for me. Like Mrs. Hopkins, Mrs. Martin's income also ended with her husband's death, and was only later restored through a special funding effort in the last years of her life.

These stories and others like them speak to a time where marriage was much more an economic neccessity, and a matter of physical survival for both parties. For those who did not have the luxury of making a match of the heart, civility and kindness went a long way in a rough world.
