I recently discovered some papers in the old homestead. They were the service records for a long lost cousin who died in Georgia in May of 1865. He was in Company E of the 12th Maine and enlisted in March 1865 to fill a quota.
Besides the application for the widows pension, was a document listing what he had for personal effects to be shipped home. He died in the military hospital of measles. His entire personal effects consisted of one overcoat, 2 socks, one knapsack, a 2 blankets (which were crossed through). It appears the hospital orderlies were as bad as reported.
Lastly was his pay record which reflected he was paid a week prio ro his death. But there were no funds on his personal effects. I guess he owed the laundress and sutler quite a bit.
The final insult was the last $33.00 of his bounty was taken to pay for missing equipment and clothing. Consequently his wife, two year daughter, and one year old son received zilch.
Just thought I might pass this one for information.
