  • info about hatchet slings

    Comrades,
I am searching for pictures of original hatchet slings/ cases. I have the description in the QM Manual 1865 but am not really sure how it looked like. As it seems to have been an issue item I would love to get more information. So in case anybody of you have seen one ina museum or owns one I would be gratefull to get any infomation possible.

      Is anyone currently reproducing these?

There is a picture of two partial sling covers in Lord's Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia (I forget which volume). The head cover remains, but the sling has deteriorated.

At last check, Dell's Leatherwork was making these as well as spade carriers.

Second Ross's recomendation. A guy in my mess has one from Dell's leatherworks. Outstanding piece of equipment!

A member of this forum, Edwin Erwin, faithfully reproduced the one in Lord's. I have seen it myself and it is a beauty!

Thank you comrades for the info. I am searching for a hatchet sling not axe sling! And to point it out it clearer, I am searching for original pictures not reproductions. I am going to reproduce one for my own hatchet but i am curious how the original issued ones looked like.
the ones shown in Lord's are for axes.

John, I have a question. The picture is not that clear. Do you know if they were worn with handle upwards? The photp suggests so. I also wonder where the loop for the handle was attached to: to the body or the strap of the cover?
