Y'know Chris, it might not be a bad idea that we could have an area of the "Event Hosting How-to" sub forum (or social group) that could function as "help wanted ads" for kabuki/event locations needed/services needed/specialty items needed etc.

      What say ya'll?

Sounds like a grand idea. With 5 years experience putting together a local event, it would be useful!

I respectfully asked this thread to be killed.

My tender psyche can't take anymore ire.

Especially, Charles Heath one of the people I have gained the most from round here.

                Please.

                  Chris,

It isn't you. Believe me when I say that.

Want ads for Kabuki have been posted time and time again. Sometimes a fresh face answers the call, but more often than not the ad goes unanswered or the volunteer(s) has something come up at the last moment. Frankly, working event support is work, and the enjoyment comes from the afterglow of a successful event rather than the usual participatory means. This isn't for everyone.

You are always welcome to get your hands dirty.

                    Chris:

Experience indicates there must be a small group, most know each other (one way or the other) and they are able to work well as a team. You are more than welcome to step into the really dark side of the dark side.

Over the past two years I started off slow, am hopefully dependable (relatively so anyway), and believe that kabuki is a way to give back. Yes, very rewarding.

Re: Event Support Positions - or how y'all call Kabookee !

                      Well, yes, Ley.

Logistics/ Kabuki/What have you requires flexibility, a willingness to step up to the plate, the depth of knowledge to do so, and sometimes just sheer cussed persistance.

Sometimes it requires a boatload of equipment, sometimes not. Sometimes it requires a watchful eye and a creative mind.

Take last weekend for instance. You and I could have put on a big show of 'cooking' utilizing all sorts of heavy impedimentia. Instead, one sheet iron kettle, one sheet iron pan. Bunch of odds and ends of vegetables and two dead chickens. Along the way, fellers wondered at the shelly beans I was messing with while they were busy being wounded and the other stuff that got sliced into the pan--including one odiferous onion that launched a soldier into a long soliloquy on home cooking. The whole thing served to set a certain mood, as the men wondered what or whether they would eat too. The sound of a chicken behind the barn got them worrying about that too, and looking for it.

Essentially, I putzed around for 4 hours while you fed a most efficient little fire and provided a second place for ambulatory wounded to lay about when they could not tolerate the close quarters in the barn any longer.

Sometimes Kabuki is a matter of knowing what might be needed and planting the item in a matter that makes it come out in the natural course of things. There was a good bit of pioneering to be done in the event. Charles noted that some tools were not fit for the task as they came through registration. So, about midnight, he handed me a file suitable for sharpening axes to place in my carpet bag. Next morning, there is some soldier at the door, sent up to the house to see if I had something to sharpen an axe. Soldier got a period experience on several counts. And, unintentionally, I have a nice file, at least until I see Charles again and this time remember to hand it back to him.

Sometimes Kabuki is knowing the plan well enough that when things go wrong, you can fix the problem without disrupting the flow of the event--and its not been that long since I worked with another well after midnight to move forage rations from where the army should have been to where they actually were.

And Christopher---you do get to see stuff and be a part of things in ways that other folks don't. You do loose some of the surprise element, but not a lot, as things very rarely go as originally planned. Come play with us.

Understood, sir, but is there an actual sub-forum devoted to these "want-ads"? That's what I meant- a more organized source for information dissemination might get more people to help-out.

I've seen ads for Kabuki, but so far these ads have been on the event threads themselves, NOT under one sub-forum that is dedicated to asking for manpower/extra equipment at events.

If there is on here already such, then I'm the ignorant one and apologize- mea maxima culpa

Oh, Chawls... PM-ed you about an unrelated topic... :D

                          Johnny,

Yep, they are posted with the event threads, and on the event listservers. You can't get much more organized that that. Here's the event. Here's the need. Fits like hand in glove.

We could turn this into the weekly antideconfliction thread and waste hours and hours each week, or continue to abide by a model that has been successful since 1997. The answer is pretty darn simple.

I see the PM. I'll answer by email, since PMs are such an aggravation to use.
