  • Genealogical Records

I'm having trouble finding a good Geneology site. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want to find out more than what unit. I'm trying to figure out if any of my long lost relatives were in the War. All I have right now is names and the units they were in, so says the Soldier records. I want more than that like rank, joining date, etc.

Depending on the state you may have to find a copy of the Adjutant General's Report for the particular state from which they served. If they are Federal then this shouldn't be too hard. My understanding is that Confederate may be a little more difficult.

A few state have online records.

The Soldiers and Sailors search engine through the National Park Service should give you name, regiment and company. That info will help when you search the AG reports.

You can order their service records from the National Archives. You may also check with the State ther were from because such states as West Virginia have CS records on mico-film and you can go and view/print them out. Also look for the local Sons of Confederate Veterans group, they will help you tremendously.

You may want to check out www.footnote.com. Footnote has some Confederate service records online such as TX, TN, GA, NC, but I'm not sure if they have all of the former CS states listed. I don't think that they have any Union service records listed, but they do have Federal pension applications listed.

This website does require a fee. It is $60.00 annually, or you may chose to pay $7.95 per month to have full access to various records.

American Civil War Research Database; a database of over 4 million American Civil War Union and Confederate soldiers fully searchable by soldier's name and by regiments. The American Civil War Research Database will assist military tactics, reenactment and genealogy research

has good summary service records for Federals. For Confederates it has not moved much beyond unit affiliations. However, its indexing facilities are superb!

I would second Mr MacDonald's recommendation of the resources of CivilWarData.com. I am Graves Registration officer for the Ohio Dept of the SUVCW and I utilize CivilWardata almost daily to verify service of buried veterans. The search facilities are well designed and with minimal data to begin , one can find much new information about individual soldiers. Especially Federals as noted. The subscription cost is a very reasonable $25 per year.

              Re: Genealogical Records

My personal favorite is ancestry.com, but to use the site effectively requires a subscription around $100, Ouch!!! I have a subscription to it and have access to WWI, WWII, Civil War records, etc. The records on the Wah! are limited to the standard search databases one can find on the National Park Service website, but there is another database American Civil War soldiers that sometimes gives the enlistment, discharge, captures, and other good info. Federal records are a little better, of course, but the Confederate POW records are neat too. If anyone would like and have an ancestor that served in the conflict, I'll do a search for them through the databases.

Any look-ups please email me privately at: rebjeb16@yahoo.com

              Thanks,

If you have any ancestors from New York, this site is a good one.

                http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic...ivil_index.htm

It'll give you the places where the companies of New York units recruited and brief histories of each regiment. I've been using it a bit. The search function is located in the menu on the left. You can type in whatever, such as a name or regiment, and it'll search the site and bring up the results similar to how google does it.

I have an ancestor from New York who was killed on 21 Feb 1865 and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Andrew Jackson Smith was his name. I'm trying to find his unit.

                  Ancestry.com is great.
I am currently a member. As your family tree grows than you will cross over to other people that are in your tree. You can feed off their research too and sometimes even get a pic of an ancester! One fun tool is to see if any famous people are in your tree.
As for me, I am distantly related to the present Queen Elizabeth II. Her and my great grandmother (down the line in the 1600's) is the same women.
