      All,
I'm fine, stocked up, and holding up for the storm. Does not look like we will get much, just a good bit of rainfall and some Tropical Storm force wind. The others in my group and the guys in the 16th have more reason for alarm than I do.

I've got a humidor full of cigars, a bottle of Crown Royal and some ginger ale...in other words I'm good to go.

Good to see you got all the essentials Landrum... I would have picked you more for a Hennessy man, but I guess Crown will work... Hope you also got enough Mad Dog on hand, you can only go about 2 days with out the 20/20.

          There's a hurricane?

Just caught a great view of a funnel cloud heading our way, then poof. BE GONE I SAY!
          It did. . .

So the first squalls just made it to the RedStick area and will be getting worse around 0200 here. 56 mph / 92mph gusts from 1pm to 2 am Mon. and then party time! :D

Side note: I just had hand surgery so I'm off from the Fire Dept. It's nice to be at home with the family for a change during one of these. Anxious to see how my roof ( 1 week old ) will hold up.

Good luck to all the Nawlins and River Yats from St. Bernawd. We'll keep you in our prayers.

We supposedly got about thirty busloads of folks into the MetroPlex already. A few hundred people are slated for centers here in Arlington.

If any of you find yourself on bus bound for Dallas, PM me. Even you Landrum...

                  Re: Riding the Storm Out.

Our hearts and helping hands go out to all those displaced and affected by Gustav.
I'm in Southeast Texas and we're far enough south of Gustav's track that we're okay. So far, we're expecting some rain and winds, not very heavy. We're ready to either flee to Houston or fire up generators and chainsaws, just in case Gustav suddenly turns, which is doubtful since its eye already made landfall a half hour ago.
Here's the New Orleans online newspaper, this has a lot of interesting stories and videos of Louisiana.

They have a link to the US Navy tracking map:

By the time Gustav's eye gets to its closest point to us, it'll be over 100 miles northeast of us, the winds at the eye will be down to about 55 knots, which means we might not even get winds here at the house over 40mph. Remember that little hurricane a month or so ago, Edouardo, that formed in the Gulf just offshore and became a hurricane in just hours? It came across us with 100mph winds, no time for anyone to prepare because it sprang up suddenly and came after midnight. That storm just knocked down some tree limbs, blew lawn furniture around, watered the yard and knocked out electricity in some parts for a few hours.

We're safe here. Got to worry about the folks in coastal Louisiana, though.
The stories at nola.com say the storm is less powerful than they expected and all the New Orleans levees are holding, power to the water pumps is on generator now and they are chugging along. Of course, it's not over yet.

I should go check on my friend's dog down the street now. It's cloudy and quiet here, nothing moving outside. He went to Killeen, which I see on the Navy tracking map might get some remnants of Gustav. Kind of ironic.

Many thanks to all who helped with the evacuation and are providing for the displaced residents. You're heroes. I remember Rita slamming here three years ago, the police and power company workers and the National Guard were magnificent heroes.

                  Keep up the prayers, boys...

                    Re: Riding the Storm Out.

Thanks for the support and prayers, boys, things turned out fairly well and not nearly as bad as expected. Still, a lot of damage was done by Gustav and the Louisiana-Mississippi folks will have their hands full for a while. Hope the traffic going back home won't be as bad as going out.
Southeast Texas got a light rain Monday afternoon and some 20mph winds, that's all.
                    God bless you all.

                      Hello everyone,

I slept in this morning, first time in awhile. Our Emergency Room saw three times the patients we normally see. But folks, from where I am sitting, things are under control. The Emergercy Reaction Folks and the Local Churches did a hell of a job with the displaced folks.

Some memebers of the 16th LA INF did suffer some house damage, and once we get communication back with them we will update you.

                      Thank-You for your support.

                        Re: Riding the Storm Out.

I take back my statements about Gustav. He wasn't a b**ch and ripped us ( East Baton Rouge Parish ) a new one. Litterally. 3 twisters in my neighborhood alone (2 I personally whitnessed less than 100 yrds away ). I got REAL lucky. One tree down on my shop, and another down on my house.

But I'm seeing alot of open floorplan homes turned into split floorplans around here. Thanks to my more than exceptional sandbaging skills we avoided water in the house. If you start at my neighboor's though and continue down the water in homes starts at 1ft. and continues to 4ft. Some jackleg built a home on property thought not able to build on from the city. But they let him do it, and homes that never had water standing in the yard in 25 years have up to 4ft. :baring_te I left the knee deep water as a wet mob gathered in front his home which sits on a hill (that he built) with a built in generator and never took on water. I'm sure he wouldn't have built there had he known. Now my mayor is an idiot to let him do it, but that's for the town meeting.

Gas line (for me) topped at 5 1/2 hours, and 9 hours in line for, MRE's, Water, Ice, Tarps & one very special roll of TP that I promptly returned what was left to the Guard after it's use in line. Thanks goes out to those guys & gals, and my hero a Sgt. from Lord knows where that happened to have some paper in his pack!

This blows for sure, but if it's a boy his name will be Gus. cause that's all there really is to do besides cut down trees. :D

The firefighter's local in your neck of the woods sent a few brothers to my house to cut the trees up. We just got power about 2 hours ago. AMEN!

                                J.L.,
Glad to hear you survived. Baton Rouge area definitely got its butt kicked. We got by in Lafayette with one broken fence board and 3 skeeter bites. Power was restored in our neighborhood Wednesday night, but I hear some areas in BR won't be electrified until mid-September.

                                Best wishes,
