    Re: Riding the Storm Out.

End of September for those without power now.
Glad to hear you guys made out ok Bruce. Those brothers cutting the two trees off my house were from your town. Great men indeed!

I'm working on getting back to the truck asap after this hand surgery and getting orginized to bring our brothers over to ya'll, Ike's path is growing more west of us here everyday.

We'll bounce back, Americans; Southerners; nay Louisianians allways do! ;)

Riding the Storm Out, PT 2

Here's hoping JL and the pards in Louisiana are making good progress on getting things back in shape after Gustav hit there. I saw Jason Thib at the 'Battle of Sabine Pass' reenactment last weekend, hiya Jason, he said the Louisiana crew is working hard and should be returned to normal soon.
Now it's Texas' turn with Ike heading for landfall down south of Galveston. That'll be about 150 miles down the coast from me so we should have an interesting time with rain and winds, maybe the power will stay on. The pards in the middle of the maelstrom will need support and prayers now. None of these 'canes are good, they always mess things up considerably.
You folks far inland that never get to experience a hurricane, you just don't know what you're missing. :D
      carry on ...

        rode hard, put away wet

It's very nice weather now, cool enough that we don't need to run the generators and a/c at night. My little town on the Texas/LA border came out okay, many homes were flooded with a few feet of nasty water that came from the storm surge. We didn't get that much rain, comparitively speaking. My subdivision didn't flood, power came on Tuesday and the phone is back today. Several of my relatives have to clear out everything in their house, tear out the rugs and about 4 feet of sheetrock, clean and disinfect and rebuild. Entire blocks of houses have to do that. I'm helping them with that, our house is a feeding-shower-laundry-rest station. ;-) West of us, in Bridge City and Port Arthur, many homes were covered completely by the storm surge flood. Shingle prices are up to 100 bucks a square, but thankfully, Ike didn't blow very many shingles off in my town. Almost all the chemical plants had 4 feet or more of floodwater in them, so all the electric motors have to be sent out for rebuilding. About three weeks before they come back up so get set for higher gas prices.
While all the power in the area was off, we could imagine life in the 1860s, sort of, by the near-silent night and the lack of artificial light. If I put in ear plugs to block the sound of the generators, it might have been even more authentic.
Our pards in the reenacting community kept calling us on my wife's cell phone to check on us, as did friends and family. They passed on our messages of safety and progress to others, and we thank them all for that.
All the pards in Louisiana and Mississippi anywhere who are still digging out from Gustav, you have my support and sympathy. It's a long road, much work to be done, but we all pull together and get it done. I love the reenactor community! Thank you!
Did you know it's hard to find wooden clothespins nowadays? :D
