On page 455 of Joseph Glatthaar new book, General Lee's Army, Glatthaar wrote:
What does the special Lance appointment patch look like? According to Glatthaar, these changes were implemented in February, 1865.
"He would see to it that the individual chosen for the commission had distinguished hiself for courage, discipline, and attention to duty. In addition, he would create file closers-one in every ten men per company-who would receive careful instructions in their dutys. He would issue them Lance appointments and they would wear distinctive badges for their duty. On the march, they would prevent straggling."
