Probably the epitome of "discussions that don't fit well into other categories," but I thought it was somewhat fitting so I'll share...

I found the link randomly the other day while browsing the Buckle website (don't judge me), and although I don't usually like to put down alot of money for clothing that reminds me I live in the 21st century, I think they've made an honorable attempt in mixing the styles of the mid-nineteenth century with today's own originality. If nothing else, how many people do you see running around on the street with t-shirts idolizing volunteer fire departments in the 1840s? It seems somebody's finally interested in catering to those of us stuck 150 years ago in a more modern light.

    Check out the rings..

I love it. Problem is $40 is pretty expensive for a tee shirt. We didn't even charge that kind of money for the Authentic-Campaigner tees we did for Paul; and they were embroidered a couple of times. I have for some time gone out on a limb with various projects. I have made "North Carolina Military Institute, Est. 1859" tees. This is of course, the military school D.H. Hill helped establish prior to the "Late Unpleasantness". If anyone is interested I'd be more than happy to print some more. And, they won't be a whopping $40, even with a UPS shipping surcharge.;)

I've seen some rip-off t-shirts but these take the cake. I'm a screenprinter so I know pretty much what they pay for t-shirts. Forty bucks for a t-shirt printed front and back is ridiculous! And the full-zip hoodies about laid me out. I do full zip hoodies for between $14 and $18, depending what the customer wants, colors, front and back, etc.

I guess anyone who does business with those guys has much more money than sense.

I imagine Mark Berrier's jaw hit the desktop when he saw those prices.

Totally agree on the prices. A little in the extreme, but hey, if you can get it...

              Re: Barking Irons

For what it's worth, it is nice to see someone incorporating "history" into fashion.

Sure, maybe the teenie-boppers wearing this stuff won't know of it's origins, but on the other hand, it might also inspire them to learn.

Thanks for the heads up on this, Eric...if I had $59/$40, I'd pick up a few tees.

Don't count on America's youth to pick up the banner and "get into history". Let's face it, they don't like history for the most part and only take it for college credits when necessary. If they wear it it's only a nostalgia item to certain folks but mainly as a fashion faux pas to the masses. I also saw a funny tee shirt today. It said...

"BEER, Helping Ugly People Have Sex Since 1862". :D

I don't mean any disrespect, Enfilade, but that's, for lack of a better term, a pretty defeatist statement. If preservation is truly our watchword, I think it's obvious that education is the only true option in accomplishing such a goal. Education takes motivation, and if it means starting with petty t-shirts, at least its a step in the right direction. It doesn't matter how much money we throw at battlefields and museums; preservation of any historical memory starts with an appreciation of the story, our story. Might as well do every bit we can, regardless of how trivial or hopelessly overwhelming and unrealistic it might seem. ...my opinion...

Eric, none taken. I will tell you this though. I have taught in our NC public school system. Yes, U.S. history. To Freshman in high school who didn't know geography or basic fundamental history. I asked a high school Freshman to name the states that bordered North Carolina and he told me "Nebraska" was one of the states. I have a History degree. I have two daughters in college. I'm telling you from experience that History is not the pinnacle of testimony today's youth seeks. You may find that out once you have children in a public school. They don't "get it'. That's just my opinion.

If they did there wouldn't be a need for "us" to educate anyone. They would be seeking that knowledge and appreciation for "our history" without you nor I needing to do countless living histories or needing to teach them anything outside the classroom. There wouldn't need to have a CWPT as the youth would be demanding historical preservation. That's not deafeatest at all. It's just a statement of fact. And they certainly will not get an appreciation for history from buying a tee shirt with a catchy phrase or likeness to make them feel good about their country and appreciate what they have because of those who have sacrificed in order for them to live a better quality of life.

When Jay Leno does his "Jay walking" skits on the Tonight show and asks questions of regular citizens who don't know who the Vice President or Sceretary of State is but knows who Snoop dogg, Fiffty-Cent, or Brittany Spears is should be a big eye opener. If you can honestly look me in the eye and tell me that in a classroom of 35 kids in the 7th or 8th Grade and tell me they all know that there is 50 states, while a certain Presidential candidate has trouble remembering rather than "57 states", I'll be the first to admit you are right! Name the 13 original colonies. What was the first settlement in the "New World"? Who was impeached as President besides Bill Clinton? What Presidents are featured on Mount Rushmore? Who was the last state to secede from the Union?

Realism not defeatism would be the watchword.

God Bless you and America my friend. We need all the help from the Almighty we can get. That's just "my opinion".;)

I don't think many people around him do, though. They learn what they need to memorize briefly foir the state tests, then discard all of it. Sigh...
