Its not that strange, it happens from time to time. I have been to two reenactments where it happened

Me thinks the safety program for this production company needs some work. They probably assumed that reenactors are by nature perfectly safe around guns. Oops.

135th Gettysburg was where the fellow from France borrowed a pistol with a live round in it (he did not know nor check) and nearly killed a fellow reenactor (neck). About a nano-meter to the left and we would have had our first (and maybe last) gun shot death at an event. Raymond 200? was the mysterious 22 cal wounding in the leg and Monmouth 199? was the tompion through the drum and against the drummer accident.

Re: Reenactor Wounded in Film Shoot

When some of the 1st Texas guys and myself got invited to a film shoot for a certain popular TV show, the so called "weapons expert" obviously had no idea what he was doing. I gathered this after he wanted us to fire a volley at each other at point blank range (10 feet or so, no elevation) and then engage in unscripted hand-to-hand combat. We told them that if thats what the other reenactors wanted to do, they could, but we would have no part in it. The question we got from them when they heard this was, "Why? They're just blanks dude."

This is the kind of disregard for safety that happens more than we'd like to think.

              Regards,

Wow! what can you say about that? The news video says it all. Just another reason why we do the events we do. For me though the best part was how to go duck hunting in Civil War clothing.

Ok I just watched this video again, can anyone figure out what that blue thing is hanging by his big ole tent? That doesn't look like a lamp I've seen in any century. Looks like a big blue "implant."

They love to point fingers at reenactors and call it negligent, yet I recall actor Brandon Lee being killed during the filming of The Crow, and they termed it "tragic"....Anyone also remember actor Vic Morrow...?

Re: Reenactor Wounded in Film Shoot

Accidents will happen in any hobby. Hangliders get injured and sometimes die... So do rock climbers. So do thousands of other people that have active hobbies that can be dangerous if done incorrectly or by those that are negligent.

Just because our hobby looks like actual combat, I think some even within and outside the hobby subliminally associate our hobby with being more dangerous than any other physically-active hobby.

This is quite unfair and incorrect, in my opinion. When someone says our hobby is "very dangerous", please remind them of other dangerous/more dangerous hobbies there are out there.

Our hobby is only truly dangerous if someone is negligent, uncaring, or downright stupid.

Mr Lloyd has a great point here. I doubt someone has done this but considering the thousands upon thousands of participants in hundreds upon hundreds of events, the accident rate of what we do is pretty low...and accidents due to weapons very low. Zero is the goal, but we ain't there yet.

Unfortunately, this is like nuclear weapons safety...not a lot of margin for error and more than a little scrutiny. Drop one bomb on the deck during loading and it matters not how many times you did it right. Ditto with one GSW at a reenactment. I sincerely hope they find the guy and he turns out be be....well, stupid.

Most of us in our end of the hobby eschew the other end for many reasons...but I suspect many of us have as one main reason - safety. We control what we can control at our events, and do a dang good job of it (re: leadership, standards, etc). As Johnny says, "can't fix stupid." So I try to avoid being near the stupid. We attend events where that element may be present only when I know who is around me and who is in front of me, and even then, one's paranoia needs to be on full volume. Its good to be a little bit afraid when guns are pointed at you.

I stopped attending events out here in the Pacific Northwest for this reason alone - did not want to fit "killed by stupid" on my stone.
