I had heard reports, and seena brief article, on the Perryville owned Sibley being destroyed by fire at the event. There were suggestions that several surroung tents were also damaged/destroyed as well as clothes/guns/etc. What was the final conclusion on this. It just dropped out of sight. And, surprisingly (no, not really) NO covereage in the Lexington newspaper.

Re: Perryville Question
Well, honey it just was not that big of a deal-- canvas on fire does not normally warrant an article in the paper.
Troops were gone to battle, wind got up, and the fire in their camp got out. Hit the Sibley and a few other tents, with all contents. Now, that part was certainly a bad thing and a loss of money, but nobody hurt.
Caught when it was by a semi-alert spectator lady. According to a member of the Allendale Mellodians, they were just sitting down to a nice hot steak sandwich when the nice lady said "Are those tents burning a part of the show?"
About that time, down in the Living History village, Mrs. Simpson picked up the radio, said "Joanie, we've got black smoke over the hill, I don't know where, but we've got it"--and the race was on.
By the time the civilians topped the hill, the Mellodians were already deep in a bucket bridgade, plaid ditto suits a flashing in the sunlight. Women with blankets took care of the rest of the problem and professionals finished the job.
The Park has already replaced their Sibley. If the individuals involved had homeowners insurance, their stuff should be well on the road to replacement as well. If not, their friends might want to think about dividing plunder with them.
This worthless idle gossip brought to you by someone who was not there, and did not see a thing, even if she was registered for the event, but was home Daddy sitting instead, and received multiple phone calls after the fact :wink_smilTerre Hood Biederman

Re: Perryville Question
It pretty much happened the way Mrs. Lawson said (Happy was helping me douse the flames too). No one was injured.
I'm still wondering why that would warrant media attention. It's not like they don't have enough worthless crap to fill their airtime.Last edited by Amtmann; 11-15-2008, 01:13 PM.Rick Bailey

Re: Perryville Question
It was our singer Jim and bones player Brad that was eating. I was just having a drink.
It was a silly sight, my old fat butt running towards the fire with a cup in one hand and my banjo in the other. I got there, removed my top hat (not mine at the time)and paletot and cut the burning hose off with a pocket knife. Here I was trying to spray it down with a trickle of water and rounds were going off that were in cartridge boxes left in the tents. Happy had a hold of the hose in the center where the fire had burnt a hole in it and was spraying down the other side. We were just trying to keep it from spreading any further through the grass and into the next field, the real damage already being done.Rick Bailey

This topic was covered and answered on the forum you do post on, and I see no insulting comments, just an out and out fact that a metro area newspaper probably has more important things to cover than a tent fire at a State Park.
Well, I guess she doesn't have anything better to do than make off the wall comments. To be blunt, all that had to be posted, was the facts. Yes it happen, the fire was put out, no one was hurt, etc. BUT she even noted at the bottom of her post that it was by someone who was at home and not even there and got the information by the telephone ringing off the wall.
Thank you for all of your "information". I guess that with two college degrees and twenty two years in the real military that I am not smart enough for this high thinking group. Sorry that I am so stupid.Fritz Jacobs
