  • Got ma picture made II

It sounded like a challenge so here is an attempt to duplicate a tintype using Photoshop. Attached is the color digital, and photoshop attempt and the original.

      Sam,

Not bad at all! I used to do the same thing at my old graphic design job, as well as coloring original images from the Library of Congress....when the boss wasn't looking of course.

        Miss Sam,

That is a fine looking picture, but it can't help but be, from such a pretty young lady. There are people on this Web Site who are of lesser quality, pay them no mind. And there are many of quality that will help you. I may be an "Old Soldier", but I know wine and beauty, I am,

                Sam,
Good job looks pretty close. I dabble in Photoshop too and colorized a tintype image of Alfred Waud see at the top of my page:

                  Sam,
I think that is a great picture. I would like to see the process/procedure you used to make it. I might try it myself.

                          I agree, good job.

But I'm wondering if the photos (tintypes or ambrotype reproductions) we show on the field should not look too "aged" as that would be a reenactorism. Should they should look a little fresher? That would mean not nearly as much of that sepia or off-shade tint, and the paper still a brighter eggshell white, rather than oxidized to a darker stained shade.

Still, poor-quality dirty-spotted-looking tintypes were made by fly-by-night photographers at the time so that might show on a fresh photo then, and water spots might also show, particularly after a spell in a soldier's kit through the spring rains.
