  • Lincoln's inauguration bible...

    I found this interesting...

    The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama will use the same Bible at his inauguration that Abraham Lincoln used for his swearing in.

Obama will be the first president since Lincoln to use that Bible, part of the collection of the Library of Congress.

"President-elect Obama is deeply honoured the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in," Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau said in a statement Tuesday.

Obama is also tracing the train route that Lincoln took and holding a welcome event at the Lincoln Memorial ahead of his Jan. 20 inauguration.

The burgundy velvet Bible with gilded edges was purchased and inscribed by William Thomas Carroll, clerk of the Supreme Court.

It will be on display at the Library of Congress Feb. 12 to May 9 as part of an exhibition titled "With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition." The exhibit will then travel to five other American cities in commemoration of the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth on Feb. 12, 1809.

There is really nothing to expand on, as this is what I found to be interesting...

Thanks Brian. As a moderator, I needed to make sure this wasn't headed in some modern politics direction.

I understand completely, Mike. Rest assured, this was simply a pointing of the finger to an interesting bit of history; that being the first use of Lincoln's inauguration bible since he himself was president. In some ways, "modern politics" do apply, however, as it isn't very often that we see this kind of antiquity lending (outside of museums) for national events .

I think another interesting fact is both come from Illinois though neither was born there.

              Re: Lincoln's inauguration bible...

According to CSPAN (now THERE's documentation), no one thought to ask to use the Lincoln Bible before this. I'm wondering if this will start future Presidents asking to use Bibles of their favorites going forward (Ronald Reagan, FDR, Theodore Roosevelt....).

Another point that I never even thought about was that Roger B. Tanney (author of the Dred Scott decision, among other Supreme Court decisions) administered the Oath of Office for Abraham Lincoln, using that same Bible.

Does anyone know if he administered the Oath of office for both of Lincoln's Innaugurals?

              Sincerely,

                Karin,
Chief Justice Tawney died in Oct, 1864. Lincoln appointed Salmon Chase, up until then Secretary of the Treasury, as Chief Justice. It was Chase who administered Lincoln's second oath of office 4 Mar 1865.

While refraining from political comment, I think his choice of Bibles shows good taste.

I'll comment on Abe in another thread.

                    Re: Lincoln's inauguration bible...

I believe a commentator on ABC stated that Bush 41 used a Bible belonging to George Washington.

I think one of the other fascinating things regarding this election cycle is that Doris Kearns Goodwin and Team of Rivals are not only getting all sorts of press, but sparking interest in Lincoln, which will only help spark more interest in this critical part of our history. I also noticed Lincoln biographer Holzer is also getting interviews.

Great little thread thanks. I was shocked at the size of the Lincoln bible compared to the one used by Biden, which was HUGE. It's neat to see these things foster further interest in Lincoln. ~Gary

I guess we can say that Pres. Obama was being 100% authentic!!!;)
Oh, and I heard on the news that Biden used an old family bible.
What an excellent piece of history to be able to pass on in his family.
