"Yank vs. Reb: The Foot Soldier's Life"
Does any else catch Civil War Journal on DVR?
I know this doesn't happen too often, however, in this episode there is an excellent group of Rebs (reenactors) in ANV uni's mostly RD II's that show right after Dr. Robertson is talking about "1/3 of any southern army would be barefooted at any give time"...and that some "soliders wore what they had until it literally rotted off"...they then show one of the Rebs taking the shoes off of a federal soldier.
Anyway, to get to my point....two things quickly come up.

    1. Dr. Robertson stated that hartack was often stamped "BC" for "Brigade Commissary" and the soldiers said that it meant "the damn stuff was made before Christ". Has anyone ever seen this original stamp?

    2. They immediatly show a period image after the above scenario of a group of union soldiers at mess. Rifles stacked behind them (appear to be Springfields)...I can see tents and wagons in the background....a large pot in front of them....several folks in the image but one particular is pretending to stab another with what looks like a kitchen knife. The man setting in front of them appears to be laughing about it. Did anyone else see this image (about 15 minutes into the program) that can help me obtain a computer image to look at more clearly? This was a fantastic image of overcoats, mess gear, and soldier life.

Note to readers....don't want to discuss authenticity of History Channel Programs...Perhaps the accuracy of Dr. Robertson's statement but mostly the accuracy and descrption of the stamp and one hell of a period image.
Also, I checked with the History Channel...for some reason they "cannot reveal the sources of their footage."

    Question....
Thanks to digital technology I can post a copy of this image (saving a still frame through my TV)....however, is it a violation of copyright laws? If not, someone let me know and i'll post the image!

      Luke,

      As to your first question...

"1. Dr. Robertson stated that hartack was often stamped "BC" for "Brigade Commissary" and the soldiers said that it meant "the damn stuff was made before Christ". Has anyone ever seen this original stamp?"

Robertson has this same story in his book "Soldiers Blue and Gray" on page 69. He has a footnote at the end of the paragraph (I might add that this paragraph has multiple quotes from various soldiers, so I don't know if he is referencing the soldiers' quotes or the "B.C." part of the paragraph). At any rate the note states the following:

Roayal W. Figg, Where men Only Dare to Go! or The Story of a Boy Company (C.S.A.) (Richmond, 1885), 20; Otis, 2nd Wisconsin, 136; Stephen G. Cook, The "Dutchess County Regiment" (The 150th New York State Volunteer Infantry in teh Civil War (Danbury, CT 1907), 103.

So...I don't think this answers your question, but it might lead to exactly where Robertson obtained this story.
