There is an excellent thread running in Civil War Photos titled Highlander.
Many Scots in North Carolina were loyalist who fought against the Sons Of Liberty of that same Province in the 18TH century. Many of this fierce Scots were land owners for the first time and opposed any ideas of giving that up. Several decades later they did join hands with fellow Tarheels and fought against another threat.
Through all of their struggles living in America they still remain passionately true to their home land.

On the Cape Fear
Prince Charlie an’ I, we war chased owre the sea
Wi naething but conscience for glory.
An’ here I drew sawrd, when the land wad be free,
An’ was whipped tae a hole as a Tory.*
When the Bonny Blue Flag was flung tae the breeze,
I girded mysel’ tae defend it:
They warstled me down tae my hands an’ my knees
An’ flogged my auld backbane tae bend it.
Sae the deil wan the fights, an’ wrang hauds the ground,
But God an’ mysel’ winna bide it.
I had strength in my airm yet for many a round
An’ purpose in plenty tae guide it.
I been banished an’ whipped an’ warstled an’ flogged
(I belang tae the Democrat party),
But in gaein’ owre quagmires I hae na been bogged
An’ am still on my legs, hale an’ hearty!
* Tory (Tories) Hole was a river landing on the Cape Fear in North Carolina and the site of a defeat of Partisan Loyalists, August 29, 1781 at the hands of a small band of local Whigs. North Carolina had it’s own Civil War.
