Was Googling and found this transcription of soldier diary, 134th Ill Inf. which served at Columbus, KY.
"Wed. Aug. 31
The 34th New Jersey came in this morning. Only 250 strong they are a
most miserable set of Pimps. About 2000 have enlisted in the regiment
and most of them have deserted. I'll bet I was glad to be relieved for
my eyes have got so sore that I am in misery."
