  • Heads up on the release of a book written by a AC member

Just throwing this out to you, especially for those of you who know me; but this is a shameless plug for a book I recently published. “Used to be a Rough Place in Them Hills”: Moonshine, the Dark Corner, and the New South, centers around the conflict that developed due to the enforcement of the Internal Revenue Law of 1866 in the Reconstruction upstate of South Carolina and its role in Southern white resistance to Federal authority in the late 1860s. If you would like a better look, head to

Thanks so much for your time, cheers, and jeers,

    Very interesting,

      Beau,

I'm really excited about your work and research in this area, not to mention being extraordinarily proud of you.

Stereotypical viewpoints of hill people as backwards drunkards too often hide the reality of free men and women raising an honest crop and providing for their families.

Did you include a chapter on the origins of NASCAR, by chance? If so, I'll have my Jeff Davis money handy.

                    Sorry Rich,
that is something not covered in the book, as that topic post-dates my efforts by a generation or two. However, if you are interested in the origins of the Grand National circuit take a look at Neal Thompson's 2006 work Driving with the Devil. Thompson has gone at lengths to research a pretty well written account of the 1938-1940 seasons when the sport was in its infancy, as well as the 1946-48 seasons, when Bill France brought a little control over the sport, curtailed the moonshiners, and brought NASCAR into the mainstream.
