Rifle cases...

I thought I'd appeal to others here on the AC to inquire about what kinds of hard cases they use to tote/store their long arms. I'm in the market for a new case and I was curious as to what folks are using now-a-days. What's good? What's reliable and sturdy? I know that it might seem like a trivial question to some, but to others who take their shooters seriously, I know you have some excellent recommendations. Please note that this question pertains to storage and traveling primarily to and from the range, not into the field.

I carry mine in a simple gun sack made of oil cloth. I lined the sack with cotton flannel for extra padding and looks. I use it to throw it in the truck or whatever to prevent unecessary scratching....
Now, before anyone jumps me for farbism, I do not carry this in the field because I do not know the historical accuracy...I can tesitfy (and so can those who have seen my "spotless gun") that it works well.
Since i've already broken the fence to farbism...I took the idea from looking at sutler row gun sacks...I simply used correct fabric, period paint recipe, and a period correct backstitch and flat felling.
To store my rifle over long periods of time at home, I simply slip it into a sylicone gun sock after cleaning and slide that down into the painted drill sack.

I personally have seen Luke's Gun Sack,along with his"Sparkling Springfield",and can vouch for the great job it does!:wink_smil

Back in my NSSA days, we traveled a lot and were very careful about our front sights. I never found a hard case long enough, but that was 8-9 years ago.
I would pull the barrell and lay it in the case alongside the stock, and it would fit fine.
That wasn't an issue because I pulled the barrell to clean anyhow.

Hallo!

In the Way Back Daze, I used a locking hard-shell case long enough for muskets, rifles, or carbines.
It fit and rode very well on the floor between the seat/bed and cabinet work in my custom street/camper van.
(Particularly in my N-SSA Daze protecting the sights...)

Years later, I went to a padded leather soft case.

Years later, I went with just cheap canvas "sleeve" cases for $6 or so. Just to keep them somewhat free of the weird and spurious unexplainable nicks and scratches from odd-shaped modern foreign objects in the back seat or behind the back seat or in the trunk.

IMHO, I take my "shooters" just as "seriously' now as then. ;) :)

For those not frequenting the other fora, I responded with a link to Cabela's black powder hard case -- it's the way to go if you want to send your muskets (my case holds both an Enfield and 42 smoothbore) on a plane. I'm pretty sure it still meets FAA regulations because it's fairly weatherproof and eminently lockable? I haven't used it for this purpose for several years.

Because I drive myself, I use a cloth gun bag with musket in the Bonneville's trunk.

I use a Plano brand locking, telescoping fishing rod case. It works just fine and the airlines have no problem with it in my experience.

For long trips I use a wooden case I made myself. For short trips a I use a gun sack.

Jeff and or others, you have no problem fitting a "42" inside Plano® Airliner Telescoping Rod Case or its bigger brother Plano® Jumbo Airliner Rod Case and getting it through airport check in?

what you can also use is 4" pvc plumbing pipe with screw on caps on the ends. You can toss a sling around the whole thing for easy carry. Safe to ship and water and dust tight.
