I don't know much about CW cannon projectiles. Can anyone tell me about this?

Re: Any thoughts about this cannonball?
It appears to be a 12 lb shell or case which is missing it's Borman fuse. What you see in the opening is the underplug for the fuse. The underplugs had a hole in the middle to allow the flame to travel from the fuse and enter the shell cavity. These were made of iron or brass while the fuse was lead. The weight will tell you if it is a shell or a case. I don't have reference to my books now but if nobody posts I will check tonight.Jim Mayo

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

Re: Any thoughts about this cannonball?
From the looks of it I would say just about a worth-while purchase. $150-$200 for an excavated piece.
I would even say he is pushing it depending on where the piece was recovered.

Re: Any thoughts about this cannonball?
150 would be a good price. 200 is pushing it. They are getting pricey. If I were you I would wait and buy one with a fuse. There are quite a few dealers on the internet. If you see one you like don't be modest. Send the dealer an e-mail asking if he can do any better on price. I suspect the prices are more in Calif. than here in VA. where we pluck them out of the garden.Jim Mayo
