  • Potential for a class action suit against Glenn Jones

    Dear Members,

As many (if not all) of you know, Glenn Jones, who provided the space for the Authentic Campaigner website and perhaps half a dozen other vendor and unit websites has disappeared from the face of the earth.

At first I was more than willing to give Glenn the benefit of the doubt. In August, the first time these sites crashed he was able to repair them within a week, but no explanation for their crash was ever given. Then, as fall dragged on the crashes grew exponentially until in December everything went dark. Once again Glenn put the sites back up in early January but this lasted a scant 12 hours, and he has not been heard of since. Again, no explanation has ever been given.

To those of us who rely on the Authentic Campaigner as a means of education and entertainment, this was a severe blow to our ability to learn about this period of history and about our hobby, but to those of us who depended on Glenn to keep our business sites running, this has been a tragedy. Personally, during the month of January in which my site was up for a total of 3 1/2 days I received 2 orders...2 orders during the entire month. In the past week since I placed a temporary site on the free spaces provided by Tripod I have received 10 orders....just in one week. I know that several vendors depend on their businesses to support themselves, and even then have to live rather spartan lifestyles. I personally use my business to pay for college, and as a result of the loss of my site had to take out loans for several thousand dollars to be able to graduate in May.

The cost of what Glenn has taken from us is hard to measure in money. I like, many others paid him in trade. I cannot help but feel now when I have not heard anything from him in over a month, than the several months on which I spent making the item I traded him were wasted, and in effect he has taken that time from me. Furthermore, no one will ever know how many lost sales I had in the times in which my site was down, but if the months previous to that are any indication of what sales levels could have been it was surely over a thousand dollar's worth.

I contacted Glenn approximately a week and a half ago asking that he either send the item I made for him back, or money to cover the fair market value of it. I gave Glenn a February 28th deadline to respond and repay me what is owed. I warned him that if he did not respond by that time I would pursue legal action to get what is owed me.

On the urgings of Paul Calloway and others I am presenting this case to the general A-C public. Any other vendors or representatives of unit websites that have had your money stolen by Glenn, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss the details. Personally, I feel silly pursuing him alone for the relatively small amount of money he owes me, but when all of the thefts are added up it amounts to thousands of dollars and makes much more sense. At any rate, feel free to contact me either or this forum or at colstoughton@hotmail.com and we can discuss our options.

Lastly, I would like to say that I have very much appreciated all of the support shown for Paul, myself, and all of the rest who have been cheated during the past month while we tried to get things running again. This outpouring of sentiment has clearly shown that regardless of what one bad egg does, our community as a whole is strong, compassionate, and one in which I consider it to be a true honor to be a part.

This is an important issue for a lot of folks who paid for web service and who received nothing or little in return.

I realize this thread is off-topic and normally would be zapped here. I'd ask for the patience for those of you that are not directly involved in this. Let the guys who were involved financially use this thread to get in contact with one another and figure out how to work together to get Glenn Jones to return their money, items-given in trade, and certainly their data.

Glenn Jones was always good to me - helped me out a great deal over the last couple years. I was always appreciative of that but I always did my part to help him as well. As things stand, he has copies of our forum database (some 3 years of postings), some of my personal research, many photographs and other information... and I can't get access to it.

I don't have a lot of money invested in Glenn because we had a deal that I would try to turn reenacting groups on to him and in turn he would provide hosting service for the AC.

What a mistake that turned out to be. My most sincere apologies to those of you that tried to use Shebangsoft upon my recommendation.

      Paul,

Yes, it is a damned shame for ALL concerned!

Glenn, not only provided the webspace, but also created priceless editing hacks that allowed us moderators to provide a much more efficient service to the membership.

Too bad all that invaluable information that so many of us put countless hours into is gone because one chose not to step up to the accountability plate (personally, Paul & I spent over a month putting things together on the now-defunct version before it even hit the street).

In my industry, you are only as good as your last gig ... and for our brother Jones, his recent actions ain't saying much.

I am truely sorry for any problems I have caused anyone.

Dan, I will send a check for the sack coat I took in trade and will transfer your domain name to whomever you want.

If anyone else thinks I owe them a refund for services not rendered, please contact me.

Paul, we need to discuss how we can transfer your data to the new site.

          Gentlemen,

I am pleased to inform you all that Glenn got in touch with me tonight and settled our dispute in an instantaneous fashion. I consider any and all grievances I had with him to be over, and let me make a point of saying that though our professional relationship may be over, I still consider him to be a friend.

          Best Regards,

            Outstanding.

I applaud Mr. Jones for coming here and making the post that appears above,
and I sincerely hope that the many posts that were on the old servers can be recovered, and transfered to this current one.

Re: Potential for a class action suit against Glenn Jones

              Mr. Jones,
How nice of you to resurface. I hope that we can settle things in as quick of a manner as you did with the others. My last correspondence with you was June of 03, when the web site www.42ndgeorgia.com was down.

All I can say is that Paul Calloway is a class act and because of his help and my respect for him, I didn't put a notice on the forum last year regarding your business practices and the service that I wasn't getting from you.

Please contact me so we can get some things resolved.

              Thanks,

I sent you a private message this morning through the Authentic Campaign mail. Let me know if you don't get it.

                    Glenn,
I sent you a private email through the AC early yesterday morning. I also acknowledged your reply on the forum. As of now, 3:08 pm, I've not heard anything from you. What's it going to take to get this resolved? It seems to me that if you were so concerned about getting things straightened out, you'd get them done in a timely manner. Just like old times isn't it.....

Please contact me so we can get this resolved and I don't have to waste any more of my time. You've certainly wasted enough of it.

                      Glenn,
It's been 4 days since I sent you the information you requested without any response whatsoever. I sent you an email through the Authentic Campaigner email system and I also sent you one to the coopknow email address.

Your lack of response tells me that you're not serious about settling things with people unless they threaten to sue you. And yet I'm the one here that looks like a fool for believing you really wanted to make things right. Shame on me.

Re: Potential for a class action suit against Glenn Jones

                        Rick,

I would suggest contacting Dan about contact information for Glenn.

                        Glenn,

I would suggest either posting an email contact for yourself or answer your private messages.

Either way, this thread is not the place to resolve your issues. I hope it works out for all involved, but the general forum audience doesn't need to be involved.

                        Thanks

Again, this thread was started for a purpose and that purpose is no longer an issue. Glenn has surfaced and started to make amends. Please handle anything with Glenn personally at this time.

Has anyone besides Dan been able to recoop anything from Glenn Jones? It's been 15 days since he asked for my contact information and I haven't heard anything. I was wondering if anyone else has had the good fortune to get any of their monies refunded.
