  • Vendors in Gettysburg-area?

I'm planning a trip to Gettysburg.

Does anyone have a current list of AC-approved/other quality vendors maintaining retail shops or supplying retailers there?

I found an old thread on the subject, but there's been some flux with regard to vendors since it was posted.

I'd hate to visit all the great sites in the area only to find that I missed someone's shop.

    Thanks!

Go to S&S. Tim Sheads. His shop is right on the way out to McPherson's Ridge on Chambersburg Pike, US 30, from the center of town, behind his old family home. Check out his website, S&S Sutlery, and it has contact info for hours. I've gone there many times and he'll be off at an event or something.

All the others are mainstream, tourist places. You can look at Regimental Quartermaster, they claim to have some "campaigner" stuff, but be very careful, mostly not what you'd look for here on this forum.

James, apparently you posted twice; see your other post here:

And pennvolunteer, all others are not mainstream! Unless you consider all of those mentioned below as mainstream! (Daley, Tart, Walters, EJ Thomas, D.B. Hats, Dirty back Boys, Morris & Co, needle and thread, Corner Clothiers, and SG Merinos) if so you better find a new hobby cause you'll be run out'a here!

There is a phone number posted on the door of SG Merinos, I can't remember if it is the front, back or side, but call it to gain access if not open. I saved it on my cell phone. You can also call and make an appointment the number is: 1 (717) 752-0293.

      Same with S&S there number is: 1 (717) 338-1990.

Daley's stuff should be next Needle and Thread. along with Corner Clothiers

Dirty Billy Hat is up there in G-burg too.

The Depot is new and a comglomoration of Ben Tart, EJ Thomas, Dick Walters or Watters, Morris & Co., and the Dirty Back Boys. Should be an excellent place!

The Regimental Quartermaster has a shop there.

There are several places up there to buy period wool for knitting purposes too.

It seems to me that S&S is open pretty much every day except for Sunday. Dirty Billy's is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the off season and only have short hours. Their new shop is just south of the square. S&S is on 30 West near the Seminary. It's behind the Sheads house.

            Dear Mr. Phillips:

            You posted:

Did someone say "wool yarn?" [Visualize the family dog who heard (or thought she heard) someone say "Treat?" or "Car ride?"]

Always up for a chance to score more wool yarn. The only spots I"m aware of in the Gettysburg area are Debbie Shead's selection at at S&S and the Mannings, which is an amazing yarn store but located in Berlin (East Berlin?) about 10-15 miles to the east of Gettysburg.

Would be very interested in other stores that may have opened or started stocking wool yarn since the last time I was there.

            Sincerely,

                  Karin,
I can't remeber the stores name but it was around the corner from Dirty Billy's place. Maybe Middle St. Debbie Sheads suggested it. My sister-n-law bought some wool yarn there. Debbie also gave her some manufacturers names to look for also.

Sorry don't remember more, I've slept since then, Mike

In case you didn't see the small print the Depot addres is:

                    777 Baltimore St.
                    Gettysburg, PA

Its across from the Horse soldier from what I understand. They were still trying to work something out for weekdays if I recall correctly.

The Depot is located about 2-3 doors down from the Horse Soldier. If you are looking at the main entrance to the Horse Soldier and turn your head 45 degrees to the right you will see our shop. It looks likes a little red barn. Right now we are only open on the weekends. Our scheduled hours are:

                      Saturday : 11 am to 6 pm
                      Sunday : 11 am to 4 pm

These are the scheduled hours we are definitely open. Depending on who's working, we will be open longer. You can always call the shop at (717) 334-1680 to make sure we're open.

In The Depot you will find goods from Morris & Co., E. J. Thomas Mercantile, Ben Tart, Dirty Back Boys, and Dick Watters. There are also patterns from Galla Rock and other assorted goodies.

If you're in town please stop in and say hello!

                        Karin -

I think the shop in question is/was Misty Mountain Fiber Workshop which has closed. I work less than a block from the square; if there was wool yarn for sale I would have smelled it by now. :)

The Mannings is in East Berlin.

                        Regards,

Red Lion is but a jaunt up the road also, maybe 40 miles or so. You might find somebody there worth seeing, as well. It's in the vicinity of York... just think like "Old Jube" in July of 1863, except in reverse. :D

Who knows, you might see Miss Karin there too?

                            Dear Carolann:

Thanks, I had a feeling that was the store referenced, though I only managed to get there once before it closed. Personally, I think running a yarn store is one of the most tenuous ways of making a living. Mind you, I do more than my share of supporting them, but it remains a mystery to me how most of them remain open. And of course you'd pounce if there was good wool to be had! Thanks for the correction on the town for The Mannings -- talk about luscious yarns, I've tried to get them to let me wash dishes in exchange for yarn there, once I'd exhausted my cash on hand.
