  • Hemp Rope for Shelter Halves

Before I get pounded from out west, yes, I did a search for this and found some references but not what I'm looking for LOL

WHO sells the 3/16" hemp rope for shelter halves? I see that haversack depot sells hemp TWINE under his heading of rope but string isn't the same thing. I would be willing to buy a roll of it and share, if anyone else needs some, if that is the only way it can be purchased.

You might also try here: http://www.rawganique.com/HArope.htm

Unfortunately the only offer 3 and 4 strand, not 6 as the specs call for. However according to Gaede's book 3 strand was observed with originals.

Thanks Troy and Jim, both of those suppliers look great. One of them offers a 6 strand 7/32" hemp cord that is 1/32 larger but I doubt anyone's eyes would be sharp enough to detect that. I'm going to keep looking however. If I can't find a 6 strand 3/16" I'll use some of this. I'll have to purchase a 425' roll which mean I will have plenty to share. Thanks y'all

If you happen to be near the Maryland area this weekend, Ft Frederick in Big Pool Maryland (Western MD) has their annual Market Fair event. Think of sutler row on steiroids. Many of the above mentioned companies will be there. They will have plenty of folks who sell hemp rope of all sizes.

                Mr. Hull,

You took the question right out of mouth! And in diong so gathered the answers I needed as well :) Let me know who you decide to go with. I'll probably just buy a roll for myself as I have always found multiple applications for most any kind of twine, rope, webbing I buy.

Be careful. Hemp is not always correct. a review of Gaede's database shows that the ratio between hemp and manilla is about 50/50. Furthermore, I've found original advertisements from the Cincinatti Depot calling for 1/4" Manilla rope for tents, but have yet to find a single advertisement from Cincinatti looking for hemp.

As far as 6 strand goes, even though its called for in the unpublished 1865 QM manual (and some contracts if I remember correctly) I don't believe that any of the surviving tents examined by Gaede actually use 6 strand rope.

                    Ronnie,

If you wind up with that long-ass section of rope, I'd like to grab some of it from you. Please shoot me an email.
