  • 144th Anniversary, Durham Station

Did anyone mark today in history? Today is the 144th anniversary of Official surrender of General Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee to General Sherman's Army of the Tennessee at the Bennett Place, Durham Station, North Carolina, April 26, 1865.

It was not a good day for John Wilkes Booth either....

I actually work as an interpreter at Bennett Place, and yes, we did have some events this last weekend to mark the 144th anniversary of the surrender. We kept it low key this year, featuring speakers and only a few reenactors, but the public had a strong showing and seemed to have a good time. Our commemoration ceremony took place at 3:00 pm yesterday, with representatives from the UDC, DUV, SUV and SCV laying wreaths at our Unity Monument. Next year we're hoping to get a large contingent of living historians to do an actual reenactment of the meeting on the 26th--which was actually the third meeting between Sherman and Johnston at Bennett Place...but I digress.

Stay tuned for the 145th anniversary in April 2010...
