With Berdan's Sharpshooters, anything is possible.
But, Berdan's would have been playing for the same team as the videttes!
It reminds me of a scene from a Shakespeare play (maybe "King Lear"?), where he notices the forest is moving and it is the enemy advancing behind shrubs they are holding in front of them.
Intersesting drawing, it reminded me of 1941 when the Japanese Invading party kidnapped Slim Pickens from the Christmas Tree Farm. Unlike Mr. Hollis P. Wood the federal videttes don't seem to be fooled.

-Pvt. David Rousch, 4x Great Uncle, Co. A, 107th Ohio Infantry. Wounded and Captured at Gettysburg. Died at Andersonville, June 5, 1864.
-Pvt. Carl Sievert, 3x Great Uncle, Co. H, 7th New York Infantry (Steuben Guard). Mortally Wounded at Malvern Hill.
"'Til Bernam Wood do come to Dunsinane" is from Macbeth.
Maybe these soldiers were just engaged in a bit of a theatrical presentation. And those miscreants from the union army spoiled the show by shooting at them!
