  • Overlooked C.W. Site

I ws looking over a book of Civil War maps when I ran across one for the U.S.Military Railroads that showed the track layout and wharehouse locations for the depot at City Point, VA On a whim I turned on Google Earth to look at the site today. The track alignment is just about the same as it was in '64. The old spur that went to a coal dock is now a bulk fuel oil loading and storage facility (same purpose, different fuel). Of course the original rails are long gone, but the track alignment is basicly there...:)

Used to be some of the road bed left behind the Union lines. That little choo choo ran a long way supplying the soldiers.

I have a book titled "Civil War Railroads and Models" that has a series of time lapsed photos showing the development of the port there. I believe that at the time City Point was one of the busiest ports on the East Coast.
