  • Black powder prices

After the recent rise in the price of black powder, I thought I would inquire to my fellow re-enactors.... where is the cheapest place to buy powder now????? :) My father orders it 50 lbs at a time for his company.... so if we can shave even a dollar off per lb it helps greatly!
    Thank you!

    I get mine here:

Shooting supplies for civil war reenactors, competitive shooters and the black powder hunter. Goex, Swiss and Schuetzen black powder are available.

BASS PRO SHOP near Charlotte(Concord, NC)has a pound for about $21.00 currently. Or at least about a month ago they did. FF or FFF was available. I also got some at a Gun Shop near Manassas last year that was about the same. Sometimes the Mainstream Sutlers will have some. Good luck. But that's about the going price right now.

Think you for your responses! We were getting skirmish powder for around $8 a pound, so a little over $400 every time we ordered 50 lb.

I have had good results with Powder inc. They have a big selection of brands and types of black powder.

            Thank you for your response!
The "skirmish powder" we were buying was from powder inc, but they are no longer making it. They are distibuting an alternative, KIK powder, but it is 10.75 a lb which is an increase of about $150 an order for us after shipping. Re-enacting is becoming more and more costly!

Kik powder has served us in the 30th OVI well for the last couple of years. More expensive than Skirmish but less so than nearly all others, it was $10.75 per pound can this spring from Powder, Inc. when ordered in 25 lb. lots, which included shipping. We can tell little to no difference between their 2F and 3F.

                Re: Black powder prices

KIK is probably the best powder for the money at the moment, if you want one lb cans. Back Creek Gun Shop and others sell 25 lbs GOEX in bulk (not in cans in a big plastic bag). GOEX is good, but if I were buying powder today, I would get the KIK @ $10.75 per lb from Powder Inc.

Skirmish was adequate for our purposes and the price was right. Not sure why it is no longer available? I bought a case in 2007 for $8 per lb.
