    What is right with people

Some good folks last year at At High Tide should be mentioned. They're what's right with the hobby.

Chris Anders: when I asked permission for my younger brother (who has various health issues related to his cancer treatments) to attend, Chris went beyond and waived any fees that Tim would have needed to pay. All of the event organizers/volunteer staff were extremely courteous without making Tim uncomfortable by indicating they were in the know re his condition.

Will E, Tom S and Jeremy B, HillBilly, Beerkeg, Mr. Preservation and the rest of the Stillwaters: You made Tim and me feel welcome and looked after us as if we truly were comrades in the WBTS. I'll never forget your kindness and consideration.

An example: I didn't have a full set of gear for Tim, but within just a day of asking the group -- only one of which I had met before -- I had THREE guys offer to supply anything he would need!

Having so many young reenactors -- most of the company was draftable and a couple seemed to be high school aged -- created more than a few period visions for me.

Bill Lomas: When I was having trouble connecting with the vendor who shant be named to pick up a new hardkewl rubber blanket, Bill -- who had never met me -- graciously reached into the back of his sutler tent and handed me his personal, never used earlier version of the same gum blanket to use! I laid it out under my shebang and expected to use it at least for that night. When the vendor did return to set up his items, I picked up my pre-paid blanket and went back to camp to get Bill's. My brother and chums had already; tracked Pennsylvania dirt all over it -- Bill just shrugged and said "That's what it's for." He's a feller whose goods I definitely will keep to the top of the list when I need re-doing.

Karin T: Patiently answered my questions about her knitted goods even though she knew at the git-go that I wasn't in the market that morning.

Chris D: let me try on gear to my heart's content. I still hope to get one of his NY jackets on order someday, now that I know my correct size.

Mrs. Zimmerman: Sewed on my chevrons for the princely fee of $1 a sleeve! Saved me from further cat calls about the tacking job I had tried the night before leaving from Nebraska. Mr. Zimmerman let me heft one of his 1855 Springfields with the Maynard system so that I could report back my impressions to a buddy of mine who's home recuperating from IFreedom injuries and wants to get one to live fire.

Duvall: waived the shipping fee for a scabbard I bought on line and he schlepped all the way to the event for me. Also cheerfully and carefully reworked a civilian belt until it was a perfect fit.

Tim B: Customized a standard issue dress hat that was otherwise my size into an oval shape to sit better on my melon. Great work!

Mr. Haversack Depot Phil C: Cranked out a shelter half and haversack for my brother in record time. Top drawer.

ALL vendors: Thanks for the insights and humor and allowing me to put faces to the names I read so often on the www.

It was just progressive enough (the stroll along the path of the original 1st Minnesota's route was trying in the hot/humid conditions -- bless the late Chawls and Mrs. L for that switchel brew) with guards and picket duty that it was very enjoyable and had its share of great moments.

It was people like those named above who made that event very special for me.

There are stinkers in all walks of life. I'll try to stay cautiously optimistic -- those who treat me per the Golden Rule can expect any help I can offer in the future; those who don't need not apply again.

    Best regards,
    Paul Hadley
Looking forward to the 150s events!

Re: what is wrong with people

Thanks guys for turning this thread around.
Always nice to hear about the good people and positive things than the other.
I spent a lot of years in this hobby and by far my good experiences have outweighed the bad.
Guess I woke up grumpy this morning!

Having been in the hobby since the mid 70's I have met hundreds of good honest people in this hobby. Great folks willing to give you a hand and not expect any thing in return. The true jerks I have had to deal with I can count on one hand.

Re: what is wrong with people

This hobby constantly amazed me since the time I first joined. The number of people willing to accomodate me, to offer me food and shelter and keep me warm during the night. Then once I found the AC, I dealt with some of the nicest people I had ever met, buying almost all of my gear used (some of those people were Mr. Wilson who sold me a very nice knapsack!, and Mr. English who sold his old haversack). It is upsetting to see even this hobby is not free from corruption, but not particularly surprising as nothing can be perfect...

Thanks to all who have helped me out, and I hope I may return the favor someday.

Not all of us "little punks" are without gratitude.

Re: what is wrong with people

:)Since I have been in this hobby albeit a short time, I have to say that I have ran into many more good people than not. Many folks too many to list names have been patient with my ignorance, have reached out a helping hand when I needed advice with my impression etc., loaned me gear, invited me to events, Sellers and vendors who gave solid advise when they easily could have fleeced some money out of me and sold me something that was not correct, or pards who just plain shared some food out of their haversack, just because I did not have any, or gave me an extra blanket to keep warm...It is what has drawn me to this hobby. It parallels the Brotherhood that I have expierenced through my career as a Firefighter, and many have in the military. I have had only a few negative expierences and it wasn't with being taken advantage of as it was more just bad attitudes. That is in everything....I am a firm believer there are more good people in the world than bad. It is just that the bad always seem to steal the headlines.

Re: what is wrong with people

I'd like to throw in my two cents worth. Several months ago I placed an order with WW& Co. I spoke with them about placing a fairly large order. They went out on a limb to trust me because I had not ordered from them before.Their customer service is great, as I have found with MOST people in the business of suppling us with quality goods.
I have been out of reenacting for a while. I started back in 1982. I will must agree that there is a difference in the "quality" of some of the people out there today. There was a feeling of complete trust, even with guys you didn't know personaly and a welcoming attatude. Things are now different, it seems there are alot of cliques and stand offishness. My opinion is the same of several here, its the difference in what is now acceptable in our society and what was accepted "back in the day".

Re: what is wrong with people

Couldn't agree more with most of the sentiments here. I think we all could repeat horror stories, but like most of us here I want to see the hobby grow (especially the authentic-minded end of the hobby) and I still unhesitatingly loan out all sorts of gear and a spare Enfield to new recruits. I'm relatively new to reenacting (about four years now) but I remember when I was the fresh fish, I was painstakingly careful with all loaner items. If a button popped off a loaner jacket, I probably would have panicked. Yet at the last event I loaned my Enfield to a responsible-sounding kid, and caught him an hour later bouncing it up and down by the buttstock on hard gravel.

I was fortunate enough to find people who showered me with hospitality and loaner gear. For somebody interested in getting into the hobby, I can't imagine what their experience would be like if everybody else in the unit has been burned one time too many and are reluctant to loan out equipment.

At least I've never had trouble with online vendors. I've received everything I've ever ordered in good shape and in reasonable period of time. Maybe I've just been lucky so far?

Re: what is wrong with people

                  I'll jump on this one,

WW&co. is a business truly focused on the customer. I've met Dan a few times, but not really enough to say I know him, however, he has gone above and beyond to help me out, once when a fed drawer kit got lost in the mail, and recently when I needed a favor from him for a special project. Dan and Brian will be the first vendor I go to from now on.

A special thanks to Kiev Thomason... At W64 I was all snug in the Sibly and preparing to enjoy the savory pleasures of sweet Tobacco, when I discovered my pipe had experienced a "catastrophic failure." Kiev didn't hesitate at all, pulled out his pipe and said: "here you go." The best people I've known in my life have been in this hobby. I'm going to stop now, lest I get teary... :wink_smil

You meet all kinds. In my travels I have met top notch persons as well as those on the opposite end of the spectrum. I refuse to lend any of my extra gear. Had a pair of trowsers wrecked and a sack coat damaged. Not so much as an "I'm sorry. May I make it right?". Had one of my P1853 Enfields left in a rusty and filthy condition after loaning it out. NEVER again...

Re: what is wrong with people

                      I'll throw my hat in:
One year for Christmas,I ordered a AA Crews kepi from Don Smith. Now people who know me will tell you I have a massive hear (military size 9 Hardee). When I told Don my head size,he modified his hatblock with strips of leather to try and make it so it would fit.He gave me advice on where the cap should ride on the crown, ect. He worked hard on that cap. When I got it,it was a thing of beauty that was perfect, except it was still a little too small. But from all his hard work,I know that I will order from him in the future.

Another story involved a pard of mine,Heath Potter. He made a kepi for me,but again too small. So he reodered the material from Ben Tart, and while waiting for the material to arrive, made me another kepi free of charge.

Though you do get scoundrols in this hobby, you get them everywhere. One reason I like this hobby is you do generally get more honest, trust worthy people who will try to do anything to help a person out who needs it.

Only been involved in the hobby for about two years and I've gotta say I've met more first rate gents than not. I can only recall one individual I really didn't like and outa politeness I'll not to mention his name. But some of the people I have met or dealt with that have really left a positive impression on me are:

Bill Treadway, 1st Sergeant, Co. A 1st Texas Inf

                            Among the best are:

Bill Treadway and Terry Handy of the 1st Tx - both patient and both gentlemen

Pretty much everybody in the 1st Texas who puts up with me

I too have to say I have met far more cool people than buttheads. The WIG is a great example. When I was still new to the hobby, I drove down from Michigan to the Ft. Donaldson event not knowing a soul. Justin Morris took the time to introduce himself, and show me around. He even secured me a space in a friends tent. All the nice people I met then and at other WIG events really got me hooked on authenic reenacting for life. :)

It's nice to see Bro. Treadway's good name getting a mention here. I couldn't agree more.

Personally, I've experienced both sides of the issue. People are people, but in this hobby the good outweighs the bad, by far. (Maybe that's why I continue to hang around here, like an old dog waiting on the back porch for dinner scraps....)
