Below are two CDVs, one unidentified and one identified.
The first image (unidentified) is an eBay find from a few weeks past. The photograph is taken by Harbaugh & Green out of Allegheny, PA. There is no date or tax stamp on the reverse of the photograph. The Negative number is 6143. The soldier has hand on chair and sporting an untrimmed jacket.
The second image is from a Kentucky archive ID'd to Private Harry Gosser of Captain John J. Young's Independent Battery G, Pittsburgh Heavy Artillery. John L. Gihon of Philadelphia, PA is the photographer. The soldier is standing with arms crossed wearing a trimmed "volunteer" mounted jacket.
Young's battery was recruited out of Allegheny, PA August 21, 1862. The battery left for Fort Delaware the following day. Private Alexander Hamilton (Battery G) noted in his diary of the receipt of light artillery coats while at Fort Delaware. He also noted on 9 June 1863 Battery G soldiers were visted by photographer. The only known photographer to visit the island was John L. Gihon of Philadelphia. It is documented that Gihon visted the island several times in 1863-1864 photographing federal and confederates alike. In all these 1863-1864 images Battery G soldiers are seen wearing both variants of trimmed mounted jackets, untrimmed mounted jackets, fatigue blouses, as well as dress coats.
I noticed several similarities to build, hair style, facial makeup, height, similar caps, ect. They are each standing at a slightly different angle and the photographs are likely to be taken 1-3 years apart.
Do you believe both of these soldiers are Harry Gosser?
Away for fun... I'd like to hear your opinion and thoughts...
