  • Looking for a quotation

I'm looking for a quote and citation that contained the phrase "...is it not as it was in the old days", I believe by Chamberlain.

All my books are packed away right now and I need the quotation and source for a piece I'm working on. Any help would be appreciated as I'm working on a deadline.

Sir, is this what you're looking for?

Who knows, but it may be given to us after this life,
To meet again in the old quarters,
To play chess, and drafts, and get up soon to answer the morning roll call,
To fall in at the tap of the drum for drill and dress parade,
And again to hastily don our war gear while the monotonous alarm rolls to summon us to battle.
Who knows, but again the old flags, ragged and torn, snapping in the wind,
May face each other and flutter, pursuing and pursued,
While the cries of victory fill a summer day.
And after the battle, then the slain and wounded will arise,
And all will meet together under the two flags, all sound and well,
And there will be talking and laughter and cheers,
And all will say "Did it not seem real? Was it not as in the old days?"

I have it attributed as: Post-war poem written by Sgt. Berry Benson
McGowan's South Carolina Brigade, Wilcox's Division.
    A. P. Hill's Corps, Army of North Virginia.

    Kind regards, Jim Smith.

Incredibly, this sounds exactly like a reenactment. If only Sgt Benson knew.

          It does, exactly!

You mean Chamberlain tried to take credit for THAT too?

(He probably created Civil War reenacting also, didn't he?) :D

That's probably the reason I blanked on the source...I tend to zone out when I hear his name.

My favourite variation on this sentiment originated from the administration of Andrew Jackson, I believe: "Times ain't now like they used to was".
