  • Wash Ives, revisited

    All,
I came across some old notes from my folks in Jacksonville not long ago. Washy Ives of the 4th Fl is famous for his small notes in a letter home about the placement of some blue trim on a jacket he recieved, but his whole collection is full of good stuff:

August 24, 1862:" ... he (the captain or colonel I didn't write it down) has drawn a uniform for is which we will be issued out this week. it will cost us about $20 a suit."

    November 29, 1862:
"...the boys are all needing socks and pocket knives, you can't get a pocket knife (barlow) for less than $2 and jean pants sell readily for $15-$30."

    Sept.9 1863:
"we are a dirty tired and naked set. 3/4 of the mean have not a single pair of shoes, no drawers, only one shirt, hat, and a pieve of a pair of pants... if we aren't clothes soon we will be naked."

I'll see if I can find more tonite.
