Adapter for a bayonet. You can see the stud portion of it in photo #6.

It is a Zouave repro, looks by the finish on the stock and the stated caliber to be a fairly early one. These can be made into a Mississippi Rifle with a considerable amount of work, routing a Mississippi patch box, and reshaping the nose to accept a Mississipi short front band, but it appears as though he is trying to make one of the southern variants. Why he did this, I don't know becuase, no matter how good you are the wood used to fill in the stock crescent cut and the patch box cannot be hidden. It is definately not worth 1500.00. Even if it was an original Zouave, the damage he did to it would destroy the monetary value of the piece.Matthew S. Laird
