Sneak Preview of Ken Burns’ National Parks Series to be Shown at Gettysburg Museum Saturday

Gettysburg, Pa. (September 22, 2009) — The public is invited to the

Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center on Saturday,

    September 26 at 5:30 p.m. for a free, special screening of a 45 minute

preview film for Ken Burns’ new television documentary — “The National

    Parks: America's Best Idea.”

The series was filmed over the course of more than six years at some of

nature's most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to

the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in

Alaska. The six-episode series directed by Burns and written and

co-produced by Dayton Duncan is airing on WITF TV and other PBS stations

    nationwide beginning September 27.

The Gettysburg Foundation is co-sponsoring Saturday’s preview screening and

they plan to present a new special volunteer opportunity to members of the

community who attend. For more information call the Gettysburg Foundation

    at 717/ 334-3460 x 231.

The National Park Service anticipates that the film will inspire millions

of people to get to know their national parks. On the day before the film’s

premiere parks all over the country will be hosting community events.

The Gettysburg Foundation, www.gettysburgfoundation.org , is a private,

nonprofit educational organization working in partnership with the National

Park Service to enhance preservation and understanding of the heritage and

    lasting significance of Gettysburg.

Gettysburg National Military Park is a unit of the National Park Service

that preserves and protects the resources associated with the Battle of

Sounds Great...but I'm just wondering when the New Theatre at the GNMP Visitor's Center will start showing films specific and relating to the Battlefield on which it stands, honor the tens of thousands of men who fought and for some died on such Hallowed Ground by educating the public about what occurrd in the Bloody Summer of 1863.

    Humbly,

      Paul,
The regularly shown film "A New Birth of Freedom" is about the battle at Gettysburg and it is shown every day, every 15 minutes. Granted, it is a pretty elementary film, but when we regularly get questions like "where were the Red Coats", "was there live video footage of the battle", I think that the film is necessary for the vast majority of the visitors here. I personally would like to see historic Civil War Films (Gettysburg, Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge, etc.) shown either in the Visitor Center Theater of in the Majestic Theater in town during the summer, perhaps in the evenings. I think that everyone could appreciate that!
