  • Wool Flannel

    Gentlemen,

I have been wanting to make a wool flannel shirt for some time. I am having a good deal of trouble finding any. Family Heirloom Weavers has none, neither does County Cloth. I have been to all of the fabric stores around here and have found none. Does anyone know where I can get some. I would prefer to get it in a natural color, and dye it myself, but I would be more than willing to buy it allready dyed. Any help?

    Respectfully,

You might check with Tart, Brantley, & Benjamin. http://www.bentart.com/ The last swatch samples I received had some wool flannel, although already dyed. Hope this helps.

      Re: Wool Flannel, possible source

You might try this guy. http://www.carolinacalicoes.com/framed.html

It's Carolina Calico's, he supplies a lot of fabric to the better F&I thru 1812 crowd. He has much more than his website shows. I've gotten both gray and blue off him in the past. Just have to give him a shout, never know what he has. One color I can tell he doesn't have is "RED". Red wool flannel seems non-existant right now?

Last fall I bought a piece of really red Pendleton flannel at Textile Fabrics in Nashville, TN. It is indeed hard to find red flannel this year!

And Textile Fabrics does mail order as well. I didn't look for red in particular yesterday when I was in there, but there was some fawn colored flannel, it may be worth a call, here is the contact info.

I've got some good gray flannel, if you're interested in that color.

                Re: Wool Flannel

I get my flannel from B. Black & Sons. The stuff they supply to the local stores here in Cincinnati is priced around $20 a yard, but they sell it wholesale for a much better price. I think I have one of their flannel sample packets if you want me to mail it to you I will. Just shoot me an e-mail at brianwhite@cinci.rr.com.

By the way, red flannel is all over the place! I found three kinds at a fashion fabrics store; Black & Sons wool flannel (twill-woven, common wool flannel), Black & Sons camel hair flannel (plain-weave, soft finish and pretty thin...very nice stuff), and a bolt of what looked like canton flannel but it was wool rather than cotton. This wool canton flannel stuff was a dark red color and very very expensive ($49.99/yard).

The same store also has about two dozen kinds of knit wool goods in all colors and thicknesses...maybe good for undershirts.

                  Re: Wool Flannel

                  Mr. White,
Maybe the difficulty some of us have in finding good wools, especially flannels, is a regional problem. I'm glad to hear that red flannel is all over Cinncinatti, but it's hard to find in middle Tennessee.

Thank you for telling us about B. Black & Sons. Unfortunately when I found their web page it had no listings for any kind of flannel. They listed wool gabardine, wool crepe and wool tweed. There is also the problem of their being a wholesaler and not being able, as a consumer, to be able to order less than ten yards of their fabrics.

If anyone in the area of middle Tennessee has seen red wool flannel, please let me know. Last time I was at Textile Fabrics they were sold out. My hope is that they re-stock. I don't know where Gerkin is but maybe you'll help both of us.

Thank you all very much. Mr. White, I live near Richmond Indiana, about 1 1/2 hours from Cincinatti. I get down there on a regular basis, and I may be able to get to a few fabric stores next time. Thank you all very much.
