  • Since it's not Richmond or Franklin, I guess no one cares

Drew Gruber posted this about the possible loss of a good area of battlefield, and I would expect more people to rally around him and this cause.

    Pat:

Thanks for calling that to our attention. Kershaw's S. C. Birgade, 2nd South Carolina and Anderson's fought there as well. The 8th Alabama was an Irish unit, that once wore green uniforms, if I recall correctly.

Re: Since it's not Richmond or Franklin, I guess no one cares

I travel a great deal this time of year (I'm in college admissions) and as a result, I don't spend nearly as much time digging through the AC. I'd like to give a nod to Pat for posting this. It caught my eye.

I urge more folks to do what I did. It wasn't hard. Click on the link Pat posted and read what Drew has posted regarding several hundred acres of historically-relevant land which stands to be bulldozed for the sake of apartments, condos, houses and strip malls. I reckon we've got plenty of those to go around. Heck, in this economy, we've got more than plenty of those to go around. What we have less and less of is preserved battlefields. Thousands of men contested this land (in at least two wars) and hundreds, if not thousands, bled on it. I don't know about y'all, but I'm better able to appreciate the significance of such a place when it stands much as it was then, rather than underneath a derelict strip mall or vacant apartment.

Send Drew a PM or click on his profile and hit the "send an email" button. Both work. He'll get you email addresses and other points of contact for the major players in this issue.

I don't know Drew. To my knowledge, I've never met him. Here in central Arkansas, I'm a world away from Williamsburg, VA. But if it can happen there, it can happen here. And I don't want it happening there.

Get a note, a letter, an editorial, or a call off to the folks who will decide this issue. As has been said, it's sad that a community as large as this one has thus far idled along with such minimal interest in saving 300 acres of battlefield while the fight is in its infancy and at its most winable phase. God knows, as many posts as go up on this site everyday, there's plenty of folks who know how to type. Put those keyboards to work on a real issue that's tied to the history that we love and obsess over so much.
