Just a reminder that today is the official kickoff of the 150ths, John Brown and his band were in Harpers Ferry 150 years ago and the bell rang in the night.

Thanks for the reminder. I attended a mock trial of John Brown on Thursday evening. It is unfortunate that the events leading up to the war seem to have received little attention both nationally and in the living history community in the run up to the sesquicentennial.

On Thursday night, the University of Misouri School of Law did a mock trial of John Brown for the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre. They do "what if" mock trials of cases that never went to trial. The historical information was good, although the costuming was seriously lacking. Most importantly, it brought our time period to the attention of the public at large and gets people thinking about the coming sesquicentennial. The judge that presided is an actual Federal District Court Judge from Kansas and is the chairperson of the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area, so that got a good plug as well.

Also the last weekend of the month (30,31 & 1st) Charles Town WVa. is hosting an event to help kick off the 150th. The 2nd South Carolina String band will be there on Saturday night for the dance.
