Re: Sorry for the Man...but glad to see him go.

John Latchar was a controversial Gettysburg figure for years. If you loved him or hated him, he was the Man. Although cleared of any misappropriation of funds, his decisions on the New Museum and Park in general were always opened to question and the topic of some visceral discussions and opinions.

I was told this morning he is being sent back to Washington. Which he is fighting-- the War continues.

I do have to say and this is my opinion only-- I feel sorry for him, but if the allegations are true, and they look like they are, 1000's of "inappropriate pictures", the new report over 10,000!!!! He was spending a lot of time in the Office on the internet and not working for you and me at $125,000 a year plus!!!

    Good Luck to Latchar--:sarcastic

Re: Your tax dollars at work at GNMP-Possible

Hello, I get my info. from folks who live right there in the Gettysburg area and are into all of this, "goings on." I am sure that some of it is just gossip, and some are facts. We know factually Latchar had some not so nice picts. on his computer, as reported in the News. I was told again, he was asked to resign as Gettysburg Park Superintendant and a desk job was offered in Washington. His being offered Chair of another organization I do not know. The Latchar story will continue.--

I wonder who is going to replace him. The $145,000 salary is a plus. I am now putting my name in as Superintendant and I would be willing to pay cut-- say $120,000 a year:sarcastic to be hired.>>

He Was Going To Be President of the Gettysburg Foundation

John Latschar, Superintendent of Gettsyburg National Military Park since 1994, is retiring from the National[...]

Perhaps the investigation changed all that since per the foundation site the new president is..

Rear Adm Richard A. Buchanan (Retired)

Appears Dr. Latschar had a nice retirement job all lined up and than the investigation.

I think he was making $145,000 a year. I believe these images were just in a two year period. How many, if any did he look at before then? Not a bad chunk of coin to look at porn on the taxpayer's dime. Something I read said he was reassigned to the Historic Preservation Training Center in Frederick, MD. ~G

Tom, if you want to pull down that kind of money, you might want to make sure the position you desire is speeled correctamally on your application!

On the other hand, just take a couple of pieces of your fine work, and you'll probably be hired on the spot....

              (At any rate, good luck!)

Re: Your tax dollars at work at GNMP-For Hire!!

Heck I would even be willing to go down to $98,500 and a membership to the Adams County Historical Society and some Ghost Walk tickets..!! WA-HOO or BOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh, The National Park service usually gives these types of jobs to people who know nothing about Civil War History or Material Culture.

Poor Dr. Latchar-- He lost the other job too.:cry_smile

Now lets be honest fellas. I'd take $90,000 to look at porn any day over managing a body shop and dealing with customer complaints about their insurance company!

Re: Your tax dollars at work at GNMP

Well, first of all I thought he did some good work. I won't take that away from him any more than I'd take away Pete Rose's accomplishments. The man did what he did, and nothing can erase that.

However, when these things come up about people in high positions having this stuff on their computers, it seems that one thing is never mentioned. Say what you want about the material itself -- some people like it, and some people don't. As long as it doesn't involve children, I don't really care if people get into that sort of thing. One of my best friends is into that, and constantly sends e-mails to me with attachments because he got it into his head that we're such good friends that I'd probably like it, too. I don't, but I hate to hurt his feelings and embarrass him by telling him, so I just delete most of it. (I say most, because sometimes the risque stuff is kinda funny, which I do enjoy on occasion.)

The issue here is not what Latchar enjoyed in regard this stuff, but rather the fact that he enjoyed this stuff at work. Do what you want when it's your own time, in your own home, on your own PC. More power to ya. But when you start doing this stuff at work, on someone else's time for which they're paying you, on a PC that doesn't belong to you, you cross a line that should be obvious to anyone who's not an idiot.

The thing that's never mentioned is that these people are STUPID. Plain, simple, no-doubt-about-it, flat-out stupid. People who are stupid do not belong in positions of importance, because the fact that they are stupid will affect their judgment in things that are very important to other people. This is doubly so for those in public service. And triply so for those whose salary is paid by the public.

Re: Your tax dollars at work at GNMP-Yes!

Hello, All you say is true. What you do behind closed doors at home is your own business. I do feel sorry for the man. It has to be very, very, embarassing for him. He did do some good things at the Gettyburg Battlefield. He was not very smart in trying to cover up what he was doing. He had to know everyday he was on the computer that someone could walk in or turn him in.

The next big item is WHOis going to replace him, and where that invidual will take the Park.
