  • Lamp Black / stove polish

    A short time ago there was some discussion about the finish on groundcloths.
    A couple of folks asked about the availablity of a blackening agent.

    Here is one;

    I'm not sure if this is going to work. If it is like stove polishes I have used it is a think liquid or a paste wax type product formulated to withstand high temperatures. If I am not mistaken (and someone please correct me if I am wrong) lamp black is a powdery substance derived from the carbon released along the chimneys of oil lamps. I'm not sure how this stove polish would mix with linseed oil to provide a paint for oilcloths.

      Lampblack can be bought in the powdered form (which is just soot from lamps and chimneys) or it can be bought in a paste form (mixed with oil). I've used it many times to make my own black paints for art classes. I prefer the paste form, simply because it's not as messy. Most art stores will have lampblack in the paint sections. If you live in a city I'm sure you have many local art stores that will carry it.

      Note: Michael's is NOT an art store, it's a craft store.

        Michael,
        The lamp black simply a pigment that can be added to natural oils and varnish to create a finish on cloth without using a modern, latex finish. I posted the product in responce to an earlier question only, not as a endorsement.

            If you'd like to get alot of lamp black at one time, then go to home depot and ask for black oil pigment. They have this behind the counter in the painting section and use it to help mix other paints. It doesn't cost much and you sure do get alot.
