  • New Must Have CS Book

Folks, Im in the process of reading-reviewing Lon Webster's long awaited, Entrepot: Government Imports into the Confederate States, and must say it is remarkable. Lon has really uncovered alot and this book is must have if you are interested in CS material culture. It is just incredible what men like Caleb Huse and other purchasing agents were able to do and how much was actually purchased abroad for the Confederacy. Lon tells the story of Huse and others, and sprinkles the raw data that we love in there as well, the chapter on Wilmington is very impressive. So, add this to your Christmas lists.

            Everyone,

Lee is spot on with his "must have" statement about this book.

I have known Lon for a couple of decades and have watched him produce this book. It has been a long time in the making, but will be (is) worth every second it has taken to hit the selves. Lon has done his homework on this one. All his research is strong and credible. This book WILL challenge some of our preconceived thoughts about equipment carried by Confederate soldiers and/or the supposed lack thereof.

Everyone, BUY this book and be prepared to be amazed...and to have your eyes opened!

Also in agreement with Pat about this changing your view of the CS supply system, also the amount of imports that were making their way in. Beyond that it is also just an incredible, if not overlooked, story of stuggling against the odds, Im amazed at what these guys were able to do.

Hopefully people after reading this book will get their heads around the fact that the CS wasn't directly buying British Army goods from the British Army/Govt., but from English/UK contractors that made 'military' goods...

Seems like it has taken awhile to catch on...

Hopefully, Lon will be at the Nashville Civil War show with copies of his book available for sale. A copy signed by the author himself would be a treat under the tree a few weeks later!

Exactly Ryan, in particular the Issacs, who had their contract with the British Army cancelled a few years prior.

                        Gentlemen,
On the subject of the Isaac brothers, may I be permitted to draw your attention to the new book written by myself and noted historian Craig L Barry on S Isaac Campbell & Co and its dealings with the Confederacy.
It is 144 pages long and features numerous photos and appendices which tells the full story of the company's role with Major Caleb Huse C.S.A.

It is available through the Blockade Runner website

Taking nothing away from our efforts...but in all fairness, our little SIC & Co book is no Entrepot. The Watchdog was going to publish Entrepot some time ago, and I have read some sections of the rough drafts. This book is a goldmine of information and will prove very enlightening to those interested in a serious study of Confederate material culture. I hope Lon Webster brings enough copies to Nashville, because that one is a "must have." Find it and buy it.
