Im sorry for your misfortune. As long as you put the word out in the hobby, file a police report and contact local militaria, pawn shops and such Im sure you'll get your piece back.

Thanks Brian. I think someone is trying to sell for scrap. Spead the word. I'm sure Bill will appreciate it. Let people know there is a reward if they provide info for its recovery.

Re: Cannon stolen- please keep an eye out for it!!!!!!!
Just got word through Facebook that the cannon has been found in Detroit. Only the winch and car battery were missing. Hopefully this can get confirmed on the news or elsewhere, but if true thank heaven for big favors!Dan Wambaugh

Re: Cannon stolen- please keep an eye out for it!!!!!!!
Hallo!
Sad to hear.
I would just add a concern that the address listed above is indeed a lot, and not a residence as it would seem not announce where more Civil War "stuff" might be found for
B & E burglary/theft?
(Especially when hobby-related magazines, newspapers, and websites such as this announce when events are held that folks may be absent from their homes attending.)
Sorry...

Cannon found and returned to owner. Yeah... I'm willing to bet that when the trailer containing the cannon was stolen, the thieves thought they would find within, a really fancy Harley, or some-other type of vehicle. Imagine their surprise when they opened the trailer and found cannon instead.Brian Hicks

I'm surprised that someone could move the naval dahlgren. Isn't there a picture somewhere of a Dahlgren gunner actually sitting inside of his cannon?Brian Gauthier

Re: Cannon stolen- please keep an eye out for it!!!!!!!
Hallo!
As a modern day aside...
Here in a large midwestern city, there is an on-going issue of scrap metal dealers, and attempts at regulation or licensing to get them to have to record and account for their purchases.
Which is wishful thinking as the very problem is that the purchasing of stolen goods is already illegal, and trying to legislate a process and paper trail
(other than in enfrocement sting operations) can be futile.
Yes, many of the scrap dealers hereabouts have horrendous records (when caught) of smelting stolen stuff that one should question.
While aluminum siding can be from a condemned or salvaged house, or cooper wiring oir plumbing, homeless men and druggies have been caught stripping it from houses with the people still inside or out of the house.
Plus, scrap dealers have been caught with the copper roofing from churches that they did not question.
And even biggies such as the giant bronze heads sawed off of statues in memorial gardens. Or, a popular one hereabouts, street man-hole covers.
I guess at the end of the day for some folks, a crucible of bronze or iron is just a profit whether it is legit or came from say a cannon.

Through our local SUVCW resources we were able to determine the markings and date of manufacture in order that the cemetery could inform the FBI, who is supposed to keeps a list of all weaponry of this sort being used as memorials around the world. Unless somehow obtained privately, cannons like these are still US govt. property, making it's theft a Federal crime. Having said that, I'd be surprised if that cannon wasn't melted down by now.Joe Marti
