I was going through the 1860 Census records for some background research for first person for an upcoming event and I came across the following occupation: "Dungarian Arise." In all my searches through the Census, I have never seen this before. I have no other indication of what this could mean. A search of the world-wide web only indicated the actual page I looked at (Fountain Co, IN), and I have not been able to find any help anywhere on this one. Anyone have a clue?

Re: Very Strange Occupation from 1860 Census
All I know about him from the Census is that his name was John Williams, he was born in 1816 (aged 44) in Canada.Andrew Roscoe,

Looking at the original, I think Ian nailed it.
It looks like "Dugarian Artist" to me, with "artist" quite plainly visible, and Dugarian of course makes a nice phonetic spelling of you know what. :)
