Re: Fought in ACW--and returned home without a scratch?

My ancestor was mustered into the 58th Indiana in Oct. 1861 at the age of 20 ,served until the end of the war and was not wounded. However, when he applied for a veteran's pension in the 1880's, he stated that his lungs were diseased as a result of exposure. Though he was not disabled by a wound suffered in battle, his neighbors stated that he was able to do about one-fourth of the work of a healthy man. In June of 1864 he was detailed as an orderly and spent the remainder of the war in that position , which I speculate may have kept him further out of the line of fire.
