  • A Hole in the Vendor Realm (at least to me)

While cruising around the various pages of vendors, I found that Haversack Depot is no longer producing Federal Haversacks (see here http://www.haversackdepot.com/ )

So, who is making good federal haversacks now besides Serio? With TMD gone, and now this source missing, it appears the only other source was He who shall not be named.

And who else carries a good reproduction of a copy of a US officer's haversack?

Try Tim Welch of LD Haning. He was making them a while back and still has them listed.

Pat, you must have taken your brain pills today because you read my mind. I'm developing two types....don't know when they'll be available though. One will be hand-sewn painted linen while the other will be rubberized drill with grosgrain trim and welted bag seams. Both types will likely be short production runs and offered once they're completed.

Bill, try Boyd Miles for painted cloth officer haversacks.

There are, as many of us know, a lot of folks who make HIGH quality gear and uniforms. The "issue" is they don't do it for a living. SO, the quest is to get networked and find that guy who can take care of your wants and needs until folks like WW&CO takes on the task of offering it commercially. The hobby doesn't stop, and we can never expect one or two guys (FHW for example) to stay in business just for us. Thanks Brian for letting us know you're going in that direction with the haversacks! And kudos to everyone who steps up and says "Yeah, I can do that for ya."

Is there anything terribly wrong with the MBS haversacks? I presume some folks don't like the paint they use?

Tim Sheads at S&S in Gettysburg carries a wonderful Federal officer's haversack. Reasonably priced as well. Maybe there is a paint issue as well: http://www.ss-sutler.com/knapsacks.html

Consider making your own. It's not that hard.

                      Ken,
I'm gathering information for interested parties. I also am of the strong opinion that while some have the ability to make great products for themselves or a few friends, there are even more people out there that should just leave it up to those "in the know". I've seen some pretty bad "100% handsewn" or "authentic" stuff before!

I definitely fall into the leave it to “those more knowledgeable” category. Living on the West Coast I have rely on forum reviews of vendors.

                          Pat,

Can't argue with you there, I've seen it to. You are right; some people should not attempt it. I made mine a few years back when you couldn't seem to find a good one for love nor money. Studied a couple of originals and used the Company Of Military Historians article on federal haversacks for dimensions, etc. Only then did I go at it and it came out real nice.

I tried contacting Boyd Miles via email about possibly having an officer's haversack made and haven't heard anything from him. Based on the fact that his website hasn't been updated since October 6, 2009 I think it's possible he may no longer be in business. Besides the guy from New Jersey and the ones S&S carries, is there anyone else out there that is making officer's haversacks? If not then there is a serious hole in that vendor realm.

                              Regards,
