From reading the patent it sounds to me likt it is similar to a three hole punch for three ring binders

It sounds similar to the way gloves were cut out, sort of stamping them out. I realize that it was just the button holes on the tents not the overall shape, but it's the idea of having a cutter made to stamp out everything at once, rather than cutting each buttonhole individually or cutting around the shape of each glove individually.
